Cards Win Second-Straight Landmark Title, Coron MVP

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Led by junior Austin Coron, the Catholic University men's soccer team won its second-straight Landmark Conference championship with a 2-0 victory over Drew Saturday at Carlini Field.

The Cardinals (11-6-2) have won back-to-back Landmark Conference championships for the second time, winning in 2019 and 2021 after capturing their first two titles in 2009 and 2010.

Catholic has appeared in eight Landmark Conference championship games, including the last three-straight, while winning a league-best five titles in 2009, 2010, 2014, 2019 and 2021.

Coron was named Most Valuable Player of this year's tournament after making eight saves and posting two shutout victories. He did not allow a goal in 180 minutes as the Cardinals outscored Susquehanna and Drew, 6-0.

After seven players registered a point in Tuesday's 4-0 semifinal victory over Susquehanna, three different players had a point on Saturday with both goal scorers picking up their first of the season.

Just 5:52 into the contest, freshman Owen Maher netted the first goal of his career on an assist from freshman Domenic Caltabiano off a corner kick. The goal would prove to be all the scoring Catholic would need as it took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

Caltabiano picked up his second assist of the night in the 54th minute when he found senior Connor Logsdon off another corner kick for his first goal of the season to provide some insurance.

In two tournament games, Caltabiano finished with one goal, two assists and four points.

Despite Drew holding a 15-10 advantage in shots and an 8-5 margin in corner kicks, Coron managed to keep the Rangers (9-8-1) at bay thanks to a season-high six saves, including four in the second half.

Over his last seven starts, Coron has totaled a 6-0-1 record, a 0.68 goals against average, an .844 save percentage and 27 saves in over 660 minutes.

The Cardinals will be making their sixth appearance in the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship with selections being announced live on NCAA.com on Monday, Nov. 8 at 1:30 p.m.
