Box Score FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Mary Washington scored two goals in the game's first 15 minutes en route to a 2-0 victory over the Catholic University men's soccer team Tuesday at the Battleground Athletic Complex.
The Cardinals (5-4-1) were outshot 18-4, including 7-2 in a decisive first half.
The Eagles scored just 27 seconds into the game when Carter Berg connected with Josh Kirkland for the first of his two tallies on the day. Berg took a lob from Gadsoni Abel and headed it forward to Kirkland at the top of the box who proceeded to slide it under junior Austin Coron for what proved to be the game-winning goal.
Berg and Kirkland connected again on a similar goal at 14:12 as Berg headed the ball over to Kirkland who took two touches and slotted it inside the far left post from just outside the box.
Catholic's best chance to score came in the 27th minute when a shot by junior JP Koshakji hit the post to keep the Cardinals off the board.
Coron finished with three first-half saves before giving way to junior Troy Young who had two second-half saves. Meanwhile, Griffin Hemmendinger needed just two saves to earn his first career shutout.
With the win, Mary Washington (6-3-1) extended its regular season home unbeaten streak to 22 dating back to 2018.
Sophomore Ryan Bradby and freshman Jacob Rocha made their first career starts Tuesday as Catholic was without some key players due to injury.
The Cardinals have four of their next five games at home beginning Saturday when they welcome Drew to Carlini Field for a Landmark Conference contest beginning at 4 p.m.
