Cardinals Golden in 2-1 Win Over River Hawks on Senior Day

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic University men's soccer senior Andrew Morris scored in the 94th minute as the Cardinals posted a 2-1 overtime victory over Susquehanna Saturday at Carlini Field.

Catholic (8-5-2, 4-1-1 LC) entered the day in a four-way tie for first place in the Landmark Conference with Susquehanna, Elizabethtown and Drew. With the Cardinals' win and Drew's 2-1 overtime win at home against Elizabethtown, the two teams are now tied for first.

However, the Cardinals own the tiebreaker after a 2-1 win against the Rangers at Carlini Field on Oct. 9.

Saturday's ending was only fitting given that Morris was one of 10 seniors being honored for Senior Day. The goal was his first of the season and his first since Aug. 31, 2019 in a 2-0 victory over Lycoming at home. Both of his career goals have been game-winners.

The River Hawks (8-7-1, 3-2-1 LC) took an early 1-0 lead in the 10th minute as Kevin Ayoso scored his first goal of the season on a cross in front from Michael Morelli.

That would be the only defensive lapse for Catholic who outshot Susquehanna, 31-5, including 16-1 in the second half.

Despite dominating the offensive end, the Cardinals could not get the equalizer until the 87th minute on their 29th shot of the game when junior Darius Siahpoosh scored his team-leading eighth goal of the year off a cross from senior Paul Egan.

Just over three and a half minutes into the first overtime period, sophomore Gordie Bernlohr slotted a pass across the box where Morris deposited it into the lower right corner to improve Catholic's record to 2-0-2 in overtime games this season.

The Cardinals are unbeaten in their last 10 overtime games dating back to a 3-2 win over Gettysburg at home on Oct. 24, 2017.

Junior Austin Coron finished with three saves to earn his seventh victory of the season. He has a 0.81 goals against average and a .792 saves percentage in six conference contests this season.

Prior to the game, the team honored its 10 seniors including Morris, Siahpoosh, Morris, Egan, Hunter DavenportJP KoshakjiKieran DohertyCJ BallardConnor LogsdonAdam Melendez and Logan Brown.

Catholic travels to Gettysburg for a non-conference contest on Wednesday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. The game was originally scheduled for Sept. 1, but was postponed due to inclement weather in the Mid-Atlantic Region caused by the remnants of Hurricane Ida.
