Siahpoosh's Late Goal Lifts Cardinals Over Hornets

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. - An 86th minute gamewinner from sophomore midfielder Darius Siahpoosh gave the Catholic University men's soccer team a 1-0 win over the Lynchburg Hornets Saturday afternoon at Carlini Field.

The Cardinals (6-1-1) have not allowed a goal in seven games, a span of 651:22, dating back to its season opener. The win extends their unbeaten streak to seven matches as well.

Catholic and Lynchburg played an even first half in which neither side could find a goal. Junior Nelson Zimmerman had one of the better chances with his close-range shot that was tipped over the crossbar for a corner in the 13th minute.

The Cardinals outshot the Hornets 14-6 in the match after gaining more possession in the second half with an 8-2 shot advantage.

The breakthrough finally came in the 86th minute after Catholic had a throw-in on Lynchburg's half. Defender Nick Battaglia launched the ball into the box and it bounced to forward Ben Alexander, who turned and squared the ball with a hopeful cross on the ground. Siahpoosh got his foot to it before multiple defenders, and the ball trickled into the net for the goal.

Alexander and Siahpoosh have now linked up on four different occasions as the goalscorer and assisting player this season.

The Cardinals held the 1-0 advantage for the remaining few minutes to seal their sixth victory of the season.

Junior goalkeeper Jack Long made two saves in the shutout, his sixth of the year. Defenders Battaglia, Mitch Ford, and Ryan Kennedy all played more than 80 minutes to limit the Hornet offense to just to shots on target.

The Cardinals hit the road for their next match on Wednesday, September 25 against Salisbury. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
