Cardinals Fall to Hoyas in Battle for Dean Memorial Trophy

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Georgetown scored on each of its first nine drives en route to a 69-0 victory over the Catholic University football team Saturday at Cooper Field.

The Hoyas (2-1), members of the Patriot League and Football Championship Subdivision, posted their fourth-straight victory in the battle for the Steven Dean Memorial Trophy. The trophy was introduced in 1976 and is named after former Georgetown team manager and Catholic sports information director Steven Dean, afflicted with cerebral palsy.

In the first meeting between the two teams since 1993, Georgetown led 56-0 before the Cardinals (0-2) were able to force a turnover on fumble recovered by junior Jake Ballard on the Hoyas' second possession of the third quarter.

Three plays later, sophomore Devin Miles connected with junior Pedro Garcia for 27 yards down to the Georgetown 23-yard line on Catholic's longest play of the day. However, Miles was sacked on fourth down, stalling the Cardinals' drive inside the red zone.

On the ensuing drive, Georgetown drove 54 yards in 12 plays down to the Cardinals' 13-yard line, but Davis Walker's 30-yard field goal was no good as Catholic held the home team scoreless on its second consecutive possession.

The Hoyas would find the endzone with 9:09 remaining in the fourth quarter, but the extra point was blocked by senior Komani Turner.

Dieter Kerat finished the game with 10 tackles, including one for loss and two forced fumbles while Ballard had 10 tackles, one for loss and one fumble recovery.

Junior Nick Gonzalez led the Cardinals with 60 all-purpose yards while Garcia added 47, including a team-high 34 yards receiving. Junior Trey Carson had a team-leading seven receptions for 27 yards.

Catholic travels to Fayetteville, N.C., next Saturday, Sept. 21 to take on Methodist from the USA South Conference. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
