Box Score Fredericksburg, Va. — The Catholic University of America field hockey team earned its second nationally-ranked road win of the 2017 season as the Cardinals upset No. 17 Mary Washington, 4-3, on Tuesday afternoon at the Battlefield Turf.
Catholic, which downed then-No. 18 Christopher Newport two weeks ago, overcame a 3-2 second-half deficit with two goals in under five minutes and played the Eagles scoreless over the final 30 minutes to earn the win.
Down by one in the second, junior Hannah Schied took the pass from senior Lizzie Ireland and sent in a looping shot that got just under the crossbar and just over the outstretched stick and blocker of the MWU keeper to tie the game.
Less than five minutes later it was the freshman duo of Jess Waite and Kelly Cancelmo who combined for the gamewinner. Cancelmo controlled deep and set up Waite for the clinching score in the 45th minute.
It was a tightly-contested game with Catholic outshooting Mary Washington, 12-11, as the Cardinals had two more penalty corners, 5-3.
Senior goalkeeper Sophia Hamilton made seven saves as she improved to 6-2 overall.
Catholic actually got on the board first in the contest as senior Kerri Shallow finished the feed from Shied for a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute.
Mary Washington was able to tie it up two-and-a-half minutes later but Catholic had an answer Waite was a two-time scorer for the Cardinals as she finished on the pass from Shallow to give Catholic back the lead.
Waite, Schied and Waite each finished the game with multiple points.
Catholic continues Landmark Conference play this weekend against Juniata on Saturday at 1 p.m. It also Alumni Day for the Cardinals.
