Second Half Surge Pushes McDaniel Past Catholic

Box Score

Westminster, Md.  The Catholic University of America football team opened the 2017 season on the road at McDaniel on Saturday but were topped by the Green Terror, 30-10.

In a tale of two halves, Catholic and McDaniel traded scores in the second quarter with just a 13-10 game at halftime, but the Green Terror came out strong after the break with 17 second half points to secure the win.

After a scoreless first quarter Catholic took 7-3 lead after sophomore quarterback Alejandro Ros found junior wideout Andrew Keleher eight yards out for the score with 7:36 to play in the half.

McDaniel was able to answer with 10 points in 1:13 to retake the lead.

Senior kicker Blake Gomez drilled home a 35-yard field goal to make it a three-point game as time expired in the first half, but the Green Terror took over in the second as they held the Cardinals off the scoreboard.

Ros finished the day with 134 passing yards and a score. Junior running back Nick Esposito chipped in 55 yards on the ground while classmate Kyle Catalano led the Cards in the air with 57 receiving yards, including a 52-yard bomb from Ros.

Junior wideout Rey Riveros joined Keleher with a team-high three catches each. Riveros also racked up 104 return yards.

Senior linebacker Anthony Santo racked up 16 tackles, one for loss and a fumble recovery. His classmate and safety Luke Kern also stuffed the stat sheet with 11 tackles, two forced fumbles and a pass breakup.

Catholic will look for its first victory of the year when they return home to Cardinal Stadium to host Utica on Saturday, September 9, at noon.
