Catholic Baseball Takes Two from St. Mary's

WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of America baseball team swept the Seahawks of St. Mary's College of Maryland on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals captured the first victory with a score of 7-1 and took game two, 8-1.

Catholic junior Brennan Cotter totaled five hits and seven RBIs including three home runs during the doubleheader. The first baseman hit a lead-off homer in the second inning of game one and later crushed a three-RBI homer in the opening inning of game two followed by a two-run home run in the fifth.

Following Cotter's homer in game one, fellow junior Jack Hennessy singled through the right ide to drive home seniors Nicholas Kuczarski and Wyatt Schmidt.

Junior Danny O'Hagan batted in Ryan Tracy in the fifth inning and Cotter drove in Hennessy on a single to right field.

Catholic captured their final runs of game one in the bottom of the sixth with sacrifice flies from Tracy and junior Alec Dolton scoring Kuczarski and Schmidt, respectively.

In game two, senior Paul Burmester scored O'Hagan in the bottom of the first before coming home with junior Jake Crist on a home run from Cotter.

Junior Anthony Ferlise homered in the third, scoring sophomore Bailey Lewis before Cotter hit his final homer of the day, scoring rookie Cid Porter in the fifth.

Senior Joseph Prego earned the win on the mound in game one while classmate Karan Sinha took the win in game two. Sophomore Jon Mierzwa made the game-one start with seven strikeouts and seniors Jonah Jimenez and Mark Duffy each threw for an inning.

Freshman Ross Dean started game two and tossed five Ks while senior Christopher Hutton and Joseph Salzano each pitched and inning.

Prior to the game, Catholic University head coach recognized the seniors for their accomplishments over the last four seasons. The Catholic baseball class of 2017 has compiled a 94-65-1 overall record to date.

The Cardinals will travel to York, Pa., on Sunday, April 30 to take on the Spartans in a nine-inning game at 1:30 p.m.
