Box Score Selinsgrove, Pa., The Catholic University of America men's soccer team was blanked by Susquehanna University, 1-0, in its Landmark Conference opener on Saturday afternoon.
The River Hawks got on the board with the first shot of the game. In the second minute of play, senior Jake Heyser received a crossed ball from junior Eric Dempsey and sent it between the posts to go ahead, 1-0.
In the following 88 minutes, the Cardinals looked for the tying goal, outshooting the Hawks 13-8, but were unable to capitalize on an opportunity. Sophomore Brian Galfond to three shots while senior Miguel Hernandez, sophomore Corbin Brailsford and freshman Mike Narzikul each took two.
The Susquehanna defense refused to give up the lead as freshman goalkeeper Matt Ellingworth made eight saves.
The loss drops the Cardinals to 4-5 for the season, 0-1 in conference, while the River Hawks advance to 3-5-1 overall (1-0).
Catholic will continue their season at home, Wednesday, Sept. 28, when they take on the Seagulls of Salisbury University at 4 p.m.
