Cardinals Rout Seahawks, 25-7, at Robert J. Talbot Field

WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of America baseball team earned its 17th win of the 2016 season with a 25-7 victory over St. Mary's College of Maryland on Tuesday afternoon.

In 50 at bats, the Cardinals recorded a season high 27 hits against the Seahawks, bringing 25 runners home with 24 total RBIs.

The Cards got two runs early in the first, with one in second. The Seahawks scored two in the second and took a 4-3 lead in the fourth. Catholic answered with a seven-run fourth inning and took control of the game with 12 more in the fifth. St. Mary's (Md.) brought one across in the seventh and two in the eighth, but the Cards solidified their win with a 3-run homer from junior Mark Duffy in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Catholic's leadoff hitter, senior John Palladino, led the Cards with four RBI's including a 3-run homer over the left field wall in the fourth inning. In his first at-bat, Palladino was hit by his 14th pitch of 2016, moving up to 7th in the NCAA DIII in HBP.  

Freshman Ryan Tracy, along with Duffy, recorded three RBIs. Tracy's first RBI scored senior Stefan Poggioli on a sacrifice fly to center field in the second and he brought two more home in the fourth. Sophomore Danny O'Hagan also scored a runner in the fourth with a sacrifice hit, scoring classmate Jake Crist.

Additionally, Poggioli, Crist, senior Mike Iglesia, and freshman Bailey Lewis each recorded a pair of RBIs.

In his first start of the season at first base, Crist recorded seven putouts. Poggioli grabbed five fly balls in center field, including hits from the first three batters in the top of the fifth.

Six Cardinals worked the rubber for Catholic with junior Jack Hennessy making the start and sophomore Sean Carroll earning his fourth win of the year. Seniors Luc Sebrechts, Ian Moss, and Jonah Jimenez all pitched relief while fellow senior Josh Martin closed the game for Catholic.

The Cardinals continue their 2016 campaign at home versus Marymount, Wednesday, April 27 at 4 p.m.
