Box Score WASHINGTON – Senior captain Tyler Zimmerman notched a hat trick Wednesday afternoon to guide The Catholic University of America men's soccer team to a 3-0 Landmark victory over Goucher College. The win advances the Cardinals to 5-6-1 overall and 2-2 in the conference while the Gophers fall to 6-4-2, 1-2.
The Cards controlled the first 45 minutes of the match taking 10 shots, putting one past the Gopher goalkeeper, Daniel Hendry, in the 39th minute. Junior Ben Pesante took the ball down the left side of the field setting Zimmerman up to beat the Goucher defense and fire the ball into the back of the net. Catholic held a 1-0 lead heading into the halftime intermission.
Following the break, Catholic maintained their lead and possession of the game outshooting Goucher 13-4 in the second 45 minutes of play. With just under six minutes remaining, Zimmerman secured CUA's insurance goal off a pass from sophomore Heston Priestley by dribbling past Hendry, inside the 18-yard box and placing the shot between the posts. Four minutes later Zimmerman completed the hat trick as he chipped the ball in the net off a short pass from fellow senior Ben Sykes.
Zimmerman took seven shots during the match, while sophomore Nick Joesten took four and Preistley took three. Junior goalkeeper Zachery Tashjy earned his fourth shutout of the season and made seven saves in the game.
The Cardinals continue conference play Saturday, Oct. 10, when they host Drew University at CUA Soccer Field at 1 p.m.
