Men's Soccer Downs Susquehanna in Landmark Match

Box Score

WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of America men's soccer team advanced their Landmark Conference record to 3-3-1 with a 3-2 league victory over Susquehanna University on Saturday afternoon. The win brings the Cardinals to a 6-9-1 overall record while the Crusaders drop to 3-2-2 in the conference and 8-6-2 overall.

Prior to the contest the CUA men's soccer team recognized their senior class of 2016. Josh Barrett, Nico Bartolomeo, Connor Keale, Alex Laprade, Ben Sykes, and Tyler Zimmerman were each accompanied by their parents as they were honored and thanked by head coach Travis Beauchamp for their four years of dedication to the team.

After being recognized for his accomplishments, Sykes opened up the game with an early Cardinal goal when the Crusaders defense failed to clear a blocked shot from sophomore Nick Joeston. Sykes got his foot on the loose ball and fired it from the left corner of the six-yard box into the top right corner of the net in the 9th minute.

The Cards and Crusaders played the rest of the half evenly matched and went into the halftime intermission with a 1-0 Catholic lead.

Just six minutes after the break the senior duo of Barrett and Zimmerman put another point on the board for Catholic when the team was awarded a corner kick opportunity. Zimmerman served the corner kick to the head of Barrett, who sent the ball inside the left post for a 2-0 lead.

Catholic notched their third and final goal of the event in the 67th minute. Joeston sent a low cross to the center of the six-yard box to the foot of fellow sophomore Heston Priestley, who chipped the ball into the back of the net.

The Crusaders did not give up the fight, notching two goals in the last five minutes of play, but their surge was too late. When the clock reached 90 the Cardinals came out on top, 3-2.

Priestley, Sykes and Zimmerman each took three shots throughout the competition for CUA. Junior Zachary Tashjy made 11 saves in the event and earned his fifth win of the 2015 season.

The Cardinals will close out their regular season with their final conference match up on Saturday Oct. 31, when they take on the Eagles of Juniata in Huntingdon, Pa.
