Box Score WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of America men's soccer team played the University of Scranton to a 1-1 draw in their Landmark Conference match-up on Saturday afternoon. The tie brings the Cardinals 5-8-2 for the season and 2-3-1 in the conference, while the Royals move to 6-5-2 overall and 2-1-1 in conference.
Scranton took an early lead, scoring the first goal of the 110 minute competition. The goal came in the 9th minute when Royals junior Tim DiBisceglie served the ball to fellow junior teammate Pat Codispoti's head. The un-savable header flew over junior Steven Lukas' head into the top right corner of the net for the 1-0 lead.
CUA senior Tyler Zimmerman notched the equalizer in the 35th minute, sending the Cards and Royals into halftime tied at one. Zimmerman capitalized on a loose ball inside the 18 yard box, firing the unassisted shot past Scranton junior keeper Eric Hintz.
The Royals looked to go ahead in the 69th minute with a header fired at the top right corner of the net. Lukas leaped into the air getting his hand on the shot, denying Scranton the opportunity, eventually ending the 90 minutes of regulation in 1-1 tie. Neither team was able to take advantage of the two overtime periods, ending the 110 minutes competition in a draw.
Zimmerman took control of the Catholic offense taking three shots, two on goal, while sophomore Nick Joesten took two, putting one on target. Lukas registered three saves in the event.
The Cards head to Washington College for a non-conference matchup against head coach Travis Beauchamp's alma mater on Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 4 p.m.
