Double Overtime Goal Puts Catholic on Top

Box Score

written by Colleen Loftus, communications student assistant

WASHINGTON - The Catholic University men's soccer team extended their winning streak to three on Wednesday as they defeated the Washington College Shoremen 2-1 in double overtime on the CUA soccer field.

It was a battle for the midfield throughout the 103 minutes of play. Catholic totaled 13 shots, with nine corner kick opportunities. Both teams landed themselves on the board midway through the first half. At the 16th minute mark, junior Tyler Zimmerman completed a pass to sophomore Sean Adams, whose shot met the net and put the Cardinals up 1-0. The Shoremen responded with an unassisted goal by Matt Wilfong, tying the game at one.

The second half brought the majority of Catholics shots, but none of them found the net.

Senior goalkeeper Torsten Meuschke made his seventh start for the Cardinals, recording five saves. Along with the Catholic defense, Meuschke kept the pressing Shoremen out of range of the goal, as their opponents only managed four shots from the second half until the end of the game.

As regulation time came to a close, the Cardinals prepared for overtime. Ten minutes passed with no change in score, as the game headed into the second overtime still tied 1-1. At the 103rd minute mark, Zimmerman drove up the field and slipped a pass to freshman Heston Priestley. Priestley drove the ball into the back of the net, and the Cardinals took the 2-1 win at home.

The CUA men's soccer now holds a 4-4-0 record, and will travel to Moravian on Saturday, September 27, for a 1:00 p.m. matchup.

Note: Head coach Travis Beauchamp played soccer and baseball at Washington College earning all-conference and all-region honors. Beauchamp's class at Washington moved into the record books posting the most wins in school history over a four-year career. He received bachelors and master's degrees in history from Washington and served as an assistant soccer and baseball coach for the Shoremen during graduate school. The former two-sport student-athlete was inducted into the Washington College Hall of Fame in October 2013.
