Box Score WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of America men's soccer team ended their regular season with a 2-0 Landmark Conference victory over Juniata College on Saturday.
With the win, CUA wraps up the regular season with a 9-5-3,overall record and a first place finish in the conference (6-1-1). The Eagles finish in sixth place with a 2-6-0 Landmark record and 5-14-0 overall.
The CUA men's team came out solid, out shooting Juniata 7-2 in the first half. Five of their seven shots were on target, but James Johnson, the JC goalkeeper, stopped them from making it past the goal line.
At the halftime intermission the scoreboard was blank, 0-0.
The CUA offense continued to maintain possession of the game. They took 12 shots overall in the second half, five of which were at the net. The Juniata defense continued to block shots and make saves, while the Cardinal defense held strong, not letting the Eagles take a single shot in the second 45 minute period.
In the 85th minute things turned around for the Cards. With the ball inside the penalty box Matt Holtschneider crossed it in front of the net to Ben Fleri, who successfully shot it past Johnson and into the goal for the first point of the match.
The Cardinals second goal came just four minutes later, at the 88:23 minute mark, when the Juniata defense miscommunicated a play and sent the ball into their own net for 2-0 Catholic lead.
The Cardinals outshot the Eagles 19-2 throughout the match. With the Juniata shots going high and wide senior goalie Torsten Meuschke was not called into action.
The Catholic men's soccer team will kick off the Landmark Conference Tournament with a semifinal game against Goucher on Wednesday, November 5 at 2:30 p.m. on the CUA Soccer Field.
