Emory & Henry Too Much for Catholic

Emory, Va. – Kevin Saxton was 20 of 23 for 287 yards and one touchdown to lead Emory & Henry University to a 62-28 Old Dominion Athletic Conference win over The Catholic University of America football team on Saturday at Fred Selfe Stadium.

With the loss, CUA falls to 2-5 (0-4 ODAC).  The Wasps improve to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the conference.

Matt Perno, Lucas Morley, TJ Tutone and Tim Murphy each recorded a touchdown to keep Catholic alive in each quarter of the game.

The Cards struck first on a five-yard scamper by Perno to cap an 11-play, 75-yard drive at the 11:03 mark of the first quarter.

The Wasps answered back with four consecutive touchdowns. At the 9:09 mark of the frame Chris Thompson finished up an eight-play drive of 76 yards with an eight-yard touchdown. Andrew Long added another E&H touchdown to the scoreboard with a 22-yard punt return for a TD for the last score of the first quarter.

Kevin Saxton and Kasey Jones furthered the 14-7 Wasps lead in the opening minutes of the second frame. At the 13:36 mark, Saxton took a short two-yard trot into the end zone to conclude the 16-play drive of 94 yards. After which, Jones capped a four-play drive of 22 yards on an 11 yard run for a score of 27-7 with 11:34 remaining.

Catholic interrupted the run at the 7:47 mark of the second quarter. Tutone nailed a 24-yard pass to Morley rounding out a 10-play drive of 73 yards. With the successful PAT from Peter Rosa, CUA trailed 27-14.

Emory & Henry ignited yet another surge, this time scoring two touchdowns in a row. Two of which occurred in the last four minutes of the second frame. Thompson finished up an 11-play drive of 73 yards with a four-yard run, as the scoreboard read 3:38. Saxton connected with Josh Smith from 18 yards away with 38 seconds remaining for a halftime score of 41-14 in the Wasps favor.

After the break, Jermaine Sanders caught a 30-yard pass from Saxton capping off a two-play drive of 60 yards just 30 seconds in the third quarter for E&H.

Tutone scored the Cardinals third touchdown with a one-yard run at the end of 14 plays of 80 yards. Rosa made good on his third PAT for a score of 48-21 at the 9:53 mark of third.

E&H concluded the third quarter with another through the air connection between Saxton and Sanders. The nine yard bond and successful PAT with 4:01 left in the third advanced the Wasps to a 55-21 lead.

Catholic's final touchdown of the day came from a 22-yard pass to Murphy from Tutone at the 10:48 mark of the fourth quarter.

The Wasps scored one final touchdown to complete the win. Josh Jordan collected a 28-yard pass from Nick Bowen. Chris Bingham sailed his final PAT through the post for a 62-28 victory.

The Cardinals put together 371 yards of total offense with 245 yards through the air and 126 yards on the ground. Tutone was 29 of 43 for 245 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Perno finished with 90 yards on the ground and one score on 18 carries, and Morley caught seven passes for 77 yards and one touchdown.

Defensively, Catholic's Patrick Thomas tallied a team-best 10 tackles. Paul Tecklenberg and Anthony Santo finished with seven tackles apiece.

The Wasps finished with 604 yards of total offense with 358 yards passed and 246 yards rushed for 29:13 minutes of possession.

CUA heads to Greensboro, N.C., on Saturday, November 1 to face ODAC foe Guilford College at 1 p.m.
