CUA and No. 20 Salisbury End in a Draw

Box Score

WASHINGTON – After 110 minutes of play, both The Catholic University of America men's soccer team and the No. 20 Salisbury University men's soccer squad were unable to put the ball in the net ending the game in a 0-0 tie. The tie brings the Cardinals to 4-5-1 overall and the Sea Gulls to 7-0-1 overall.

The Catholic offense started the game strong with a shot on goal by sophomore Sean Adams just 50 seconds into the first half. Salisbury's goalkeeper Drew Staedeli made the save and both teams battled back and forth in attempt to get a goal.

A Salisbury shot looked promising in the 24th minute when CUA senior defender Joe Taylor stepped in to make a defensive save holding the Sea Gulls at bay.  Torsten Meuschke made a save off a Salisbury header in the 44th minute, ending the half with six shots from Salisbury and just one from Catholic.

Starting the second half, the Cardinal offense came out strong again, gaining a corner kick opportunity in the first minute of play. Unable to complete the shot, the Cards found themselves on the Sea Gulls end of the field defending three consecutive corners.

After a few early substitutions in the second half, the Catholic offense remained strong taking three shots on goal with four shots total, but unable to get one past Staedeli.  In the final 45 minutes of regulation play the Cardinals shut down the Sea Gulls, who did not take a single shot.

At the end of regulation the game both teams remained scoreless sending the contest into overtime. Neither team was able to get a shot off ending the home contest in a tie.

"We did really well helping each other out. I thought the guys played as a team and battled hard. We went for loose balls, and even though they (Salisbury) were bigger I thought we did well in the air," said CUA Head Soccer Coach Travis Beauchamp

Meuschke made a total of two saves, as the CUA offense took four shots on goal with Adams leading the Cardinals with two.

The CUA men's soccer team will host Merchant Marine Academy in a Landmark Conference match on Saturday, October 4, at 12:00 p.m. on the CUA Soccer Field.
