Box Score WASHINGTON – The Catholic University men's soccer
team celebrated its Senior Day by picking up a 3-0 win over
visiting Moravian College on Saturday, Oct. 5 in Washington,
D.C.
Prior to the start of the game, CUA seniors Ben
Fernandez, Justin Oloriz, Kevin
Romano, Ian Smith, Ethan
DaPonte, Earl Hamilton, and Chris
Larson were honored for their achievements and contribution to
the men's soccer program during their four-year careers. With
today's victory, the Class of 2014 has an overall record of
44-19-7 and a 16-2-5 record in Landmark Conference play.
Tyler Zimmerman (Raleigh, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) got
the scoring started in the 30th minute of the game as Michael
McCurnin (Newark, Del./Archmere Academy) crossed the ball from
the left wing as Zimmerman made a run into the top of the
18 and ripped a shot past Brian Boland to put the Cards up 1-0.
Ten minutes later, McCurnin got back in on the action
when he charged the 6 yard box and finished off a pass from Ben
Sykes (Louisville, Ky./Trinity) into the near post. The goal
put the Cardinals up 2-0 at the 39:21 mark as the score remained
the same until halftime.
The Cardinals dominated the first half action, firing off nine
shots and only conceding two to the Greyhounds. Catholic also
created six corner kick opportunities to Moravian's one.
A quick intermission was all that was needed as
McCurnin was back at it to start the second half.
Larson threaded a pass through the Greyhound defense as
McCurnin ran onto the ball and found the back of the net
for his second goal of the game in the 49th minute for the
team's final tally of the afternoon.
For the game, the Cardinals owned a 19-to-5 advantage in shots,
including 13 on goal. Catholic also had the final advantage in
corner kicks, 8-to-1.
Torsten Meuschke (Gaithersburg, Md./Magruder) picked up
two saves in his second shutout victory of the year.
Catholic improves to 1-0-1 in Landmark Conference action. The
Cardinals are sitting in 2nd place after today's win.
The Cardinals (6-3-2) return to action this Wednesday, Oct. 9
when they welcome McDaniel College to Washington, D.C. for a
non-conference tilt, scheduled to kickoff at 3:30p.m.
