Cardinals Blank Moravian on Senior Day

Box Score

WASHINGTON – The Catholic University men's soccer team celebrated its Senior Day by picking up a 3-0 win over visiting Moravian College on Saturday, Oct. 5 in Washington, D.C.

Prior to the start of the game, CUA seniors Ben Fernandez, Justin Oloriz, Kevin Romano, Ian Smith, Ethan DaPonte, Earl Hamilton, and Chris Larson were honored for their achievements and contribution to the men's soccer program during their four-year careers. With today's victory, the Class of 2014 has an overall record of 44-19-7 and a 16-2-5 record in Landmark Conference play.

Tyler Zimmerman (Raleigh, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) got the scoring started in the 30th minute of the game as Michael McCurnin (Newark, Del./Archmere Academy) crossed the ball from the left wing as Zimmerman made a run into the top of the 18 and ripped a shot past Brian Boland to put the Cards up 1-0.

Ten minutes later, McCurnin got back in on the action when he charged the 6 yard box and finished off a pass from Ben Sykes (Louisville, Ky./Trinity) into the near post. The goal put the Cardinals up 2-0 at the 39:21 mark as the score remained the same until halftime.

The Cardinals dominated the first half action, firing off nine shots and only conceding two to the Greyhounds. Catholic also created six corner kick opportunities to Moravian's one.

A quick intermission was all that was needed as McCurnin was back at it to start the second half. Larson threaded a pass through the Greyhound defense as McCurnin ran onto the ball and found the back of the net for his second goal of the game in the 49th minute for the team's final tally of the afternoon.

For the game, the Cardinals owned a 19-to-5 advantage in shots, including 13 on goal. Catholic also had the final advantage in corner kicks, 8-to-1.

Torsten Meuschke (Gaithersburg, Md./Magruder) picked up two saves in his second shutout victory of the year.

Catholic improves to 1-0-1 in Landmark Conference action. The Cardinals are sitting in 2nd place after today's win.

The Cardinals (6-3-2) return to action this Wednesday, Oct. 9 when they welcome McDaniel College to Washington, D.C. for a non-conference tilt, scheduled to kickoff at 3:30p.m.
