CUA suffers first loss of season, falls to Rowan 3-2

Box Score

WASHINGTON – No. 7 CUA (4-1) suffered its first loss of the 2012 season on Saturday, falling to Rowan 3-2 inside Cardinal Stadium.  The Profs (3-2) jumped out to a 2-0 lead before CUA battled back to tie the score, only to see Rowan score the game-winner in the 67th minute.

Rowan's Kellie Campbell took the first shot of the day 4:30 into the game, but CUA's Megan Comunale was there for the save.

Four minutes later, Hayley Wright took CUA's first shot, but Steph Colombo sent it back for the Profs.

Colombo continued to make things tough for CUA, stopping four more shots in a span of three minutes to keep the Cardinals off the scoreboard.

Maura Campbell looked to put the Cards on top with her shot at the 15:09 mark, but again Colombo made the stop.

Rowan's Campbell broke the scoreless tie with a goal at the 18:52 mark to make it 1-0 Profs.

Kiera McGovern looked for the equalizer for CUA at the 22:17 mark, but Colombo continued to keep CUA out of the cage.

Colleen Harwood tried her hand around the 25-minute mark, but her shot hit off the post.

The Profs went in front by two when Amy McKeever scored with 19 seconds to play before halftime.

Five minutes into the second half, Harwood got CUA on the board when she took a feed from Taylor Elliott and scored to make it 2-1.

The shots continued to come for CUA with three in a span of 1:30, but Colombo was there for all three saves.

A shot by Maura Campbell around the 60-minute mark was saved, and Rebecca Lukaszczyk's attempt was later blocked as CUA continued to look for the tying score.

The Cardinals broke through at the 65:51 mark when Wright scored off a feed from Harwood, and it looked as though the teams may need overtime to decide this one.

Rowan had other plans though, as Karlee Henderson came right back and scored the game-winner with just over three minutes to play.

CUA had one final chance to try and force OT, but Harwood's shot was stopped by Colombo at the 68:51 mark.

CUA finished with a 22-17 advantage in shots, while both teams were awarded eight penalty corners.

Comunale stopped 11 shots in goal for the Cards, and Colombo sent back 14 for the Profs.

The Cardinals return to action on Wednesday evening when they hit the road to face Salisbury.  Start time is set for 6 p.m.
