Box Score FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – CUA saw its three-match winning
streak come to an end on Wednesday, with the Cardinals (3-2)
dropping a 3-0 decision at Mary Washington. The Eagles scored
twice in the opening half and added an insurance goal early in the
second to improve to 4-1 on the year.
Neither team had much going on offense during the early portion of
the match, with CUA's Ian Smith taking the lone shot of the
opening 15 minutes.
Nick Shepherd took Mary Washington's opening shot and it
turned out to be a goal for a 1-0 Eagles lead at the 18:03
mark. Matt Alter assisted on the score.
A second shot from Smith, this one coming around the 26-minute
mark, hit the post, and CUA remained down 1-0.
The Eagles added to their lead when Patrick Kelly took a feed from
Shepherd at the 28:19 mark and found the back of the net for a 2-0
advantage.
CUA had three more shots in the opening half, but Ben Fleri, Joe
Taylor and Chris Larson were all off the mark with their
attempts.
Much like the first half, the second began slowly, with no shots
from either team for the first 13 minutes.
That changed at the 59:23 mark when Kelly netted his second score
of the day off a feed from Omar Ismall.
The Mary Washington defense controlled most of the action from
there, holding CUA without a shot for the entire second half.
The Cardinals were awarded a corner kick late in the match, but
nothing came of it.
CUA outshot the Eagles 5-2 in the first half, but Mary Washington
finished with a 6-5 advantage in that category. The Cardinals
were awarded three corner kicks and the Eagles were awarded
two.
CUA has a tough test up next, when the Cardinals play host to No.
