CUA pulls away from Frostburg State to earn second straight win

FROSTBURG, Md. – CUA won its second straight game on Monday afternoon, downing Frostburg State 11-4.  The Cardinals broke open up a tight affair with six runs in the eighth to earn their 18th win of the season.

CUA scored four times in the first inning to jump in front early.  The Cardinals loaded the bases with no outs and Dave Grear drove in Tim Mierzwa for the game's first run.  A Frostburg State error also allowed Dan Sullivan to cross.

Wes Stonelake then singled home Matt Grieb to make it 3-0 and with two outs, Dan Hinchcliff drew a bases loaded walk to force in the Cardinals' fourth run.

The game was scoreless for the next three innings until the Bobcats scored twice in the fifth and once more in the sixth to pull within one.

Torian Cyrus and J.K. Flauro doubled home runs in the fifth, while Mike Virbickis' sac fly in the sixth brought home Adam Summerfeit for Frostburg State.

CUA upped its lead to two with a single run in the seventh, when Grieb crossed on a Bobcats wild pitch.

The Cardinals then blew the game wide open with six runs in the eighth, beginning with an RBI single by Hinchcliff and RBI double by Mierzwa.

Grieb singled home Mierzwa to make it 8-3 and after Stonelake brought home two runs with a double, CUA was in front 10-3.  Stonelake then came home on a Frostburg State error to complete the Cardinals scoring.

The Bobcats scored once in the eighth when Cyrus singled home Hawthorne for the final run of the afternoon.

Justin D'Alessandro earned the win on the mound for CUA after he went 5.0 innings, struck out six and only allowed two runs.  Colin Kelly (1.0) and Robin Mowatt (3.0) came on in relief for the Cardinals.

Stonelake led the CUA offense with three hits and three runs batted in, while Grieb finished with two hits.

Joe Markiewicz was dealt the loss after allowing two earned runs on two hits in two-thirds of an inning.
