CUA notches third straight shutout, downs Salisbury 2-0

Box Score

WASHINGTON – CUA picked up an impressive 2-0 win over Salisbury on Wednesday, as the Cardinals earned their 12th win of 2012.  After both teams were scoreless for the first 67 minutes, Kevin Romano and Mike Brennan scored just 10 minutes apart to give CUA a big win over the Sea Gulls.

Both teams came into Wednesday's match regionally ranked, with the Cardinals checking in at No. 9 in the Mid-Atlantic and Salisbury sitting at No. 7 in the South Atlantic.

After the teams traded shots in the early going, CUA unleashed the next six attempts, but was unable to get on the board.

Back-to-back shots by the Sea Gulls near the 25-minute mark were both saved by CUA's Cam McGrory and the match remained scoreless.

The final shot of the first 45 minutes came from Salisbury's Jake Perry at the 42:14 mark, but McGrory was once again up to the challenge.

15 minutes into the second half, CUA was awarded a corner kick, which led to a header by Hunter Horvath, but it went high.

Three minutes later, Romano blasted a beautiful shot into the back of the net from 25 yards away to put the Cardinals in front 1-0.

With a little over 10 minutes remaining, Brennan upped the Cards' lead to two when he netted his sixth goal of the season.

That proved to be all the offense CUA needed, as the Cardinals recorded their third straight shutout and sixth of 2012.

CUA finished with a 12-11 advantage in shots, while both teams were awarded three corner kicks.

McGrory stopped six shots for the home team, and John Vnenchak sent back three for the Sea Gulls.

CUA has one regular season contest remaining, which will take place on Saturday when the Cardinals travel to Madison, New Jersey to face Drew.  Start time is set for 3:30 p.m.

The Cardinals enter the match with a Landmark Conference record of 5-1, which ties them with Scranton and Susquehanna atop the standings.  Drew comes in with a 4-2 record.  CUA has clinched a spot in next week's conference tournament, but the final seeding will not be determined until after this weekend's matches.
