Box Score WASHINGTON – CUA won its third straight Landmark
Conference match on Wednesday, shutting out Goucher 3-0 at
home. The Cardinals jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 25th
minute on Ben Fernandez's goal, and Hunter Horvath added a
pair of scores in the second half to seal the Cardinals' 10th
win of 2012.
CUA controlled the action in this one from start to finish,
outshooting the Gophers 29-9, including a 17-4 advantage in the
second half.
Goucher got off the first shot of the day, from Nate Margolis just
1:06 into the match, but it went high.
The Cardinals then took 10 of the next 11 shots, including a
header from Mike Brennan at the 23:59 mark that was saved by Scott
Witte.
One minute later, CUA got on the board when Fernandez took a feed
from Kevin Romano and found the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
In the final six minutes before halftime, Goucher was able to get
off a pair of shots, but both went high, and the Cardinals took
their one-goal lead into the break.
20 minutes into the second half, the Cardinals added to their lead
when Tyler Zimmerman fed Horvath for his second goal of the season
and a 2-0 lead.
The shots continued to come for CUA, with three in the next
several minutes, including one by Horvath that again found the back
of the net and gave the Cards a comfortable three-goal
advantage.
Goucher's Parker Bay tried to get the Gophers on the board
in the 79th minute, but his attempt was stopped by CUA's Cam
McGrory to preserve the shutout.
CUA was awarded 10 corner kicks on the day, with only two going to
Goucher.
McGrory finished with five saves for the home team, while Scott
Witte sent back eight shots for Goucher.
On Saturday, CUA welcomes No. 19 Scranton to town for a crucial
Landmark Conference showdown on Senior Day. Start time is set
for 3:30 p.m. The Cardinals enter the match with a 4-1 record
within the conference and the Royals come in unbeaten, sporting a
5-0 mark.
