Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – CUA had its hands full on Friday
evening, falling to No. 6 Christopher Newport 5-0 in front of over
900 spectators. The Captains scored four times in the first
half and added one more score after halftime to send the Cardinals
to a tough opening night loss.
CUA was only able to muster five shots on the evening, which
included just two in the opening 45 minutes. The Cardinals
were awarded five corner kicks, but were unable to
capitalize.
Sean Libby played the first half in goal for CUA and stopped four
shots before Torsten Meuschke went the entire second half and sent
back four shots of his own.
For CNU, Justin Wolfe played all 90 minutes in goal and recorded
two saves.
CUA found itself in an early hole when Brian Lybert scored off an
assist from Jalon Brown and Denny Arinello just 9:21 into the
match. The Captains added their second goal less than two
minutes later and the Cardinals were down 2-0.
CNU added its third goal in the opening 20 minutes when Winston
Mattheisen scored at the 18:02 mark and Jack Cooper's score
with 31:44 gone made it a four-goal game.
The Cardinals tried to get back into it in the second half, but
Ben Fieri's shot was stopped at the 60:35 mark, while Mike
Brennan's attempt 15 minutes later sailed high.
On Saturday, CUA closes out action at the CNU Tournament when the
Cardinals take on Virginia Wesleyan. Start time is slated for
5 p.m.
