CUA battles back to force OT before falling to Rutgers-Camden

Box Score

WASHINGTON – After falling behind 2-0 to Rutgers-Camden, CUA battled back and eventually tied things at two on Ben Fleri's score with 34 seconds remaining in regulation.  But the Scarlet Raptors Mitch Grotti scored in the 99th minute of overtime to send the visitors to a dramatic 3-2 victory.

CUA took the game's first four shots, but two were saved, one was blocked and the other went wide, keeping the game scoreless in the early going.

Rutgers-Camden's Zaiere Putmon took the Scarlet Raptors first shot at the 22:54 mark, but it sailed wide.

With over 31 minutes gone in the opening half Chris Edelschein scored for Rutgers-Camden, putting the visitors ahead 1-0.

CUA had just one more shot in the half, which came from Hunter Horvath at the 35:46 mark, but Tim VanLiew made the save for Rutgers-Camden.

The Scarlet Raptors added to their lead when Taylor McGrory scored with under two minutes to go before halftime, making it a 2-0 game.

CUA began to get more scoring chances in the second half, beginning with Ian Smith's shot just 1:49 in, but his attempt went wide.  Fleri's shot three minutes later was saved and that wound up being the Cardinals last shot for the next 14 minutes of action.

With under 20 minutes remaining, CUA's Kevin Romano drilled home a penalty kick, the second straight game in which he's done that, and the Cardinals were within one, 2-1.

As the game moved on it looked as though the Cardinals might not have enough time for an equalizer, but that all changed when Horvath put a corner kick into play at the 88:36 mark.

After Horvath put the ball in, Rutgers-Camden was whistled for a foul, giving CUA a free kick as precious seconds ticked away.  Fleri then stepped up and hit a beautiful shot that found the back of the net and sent the CUA faithful into a frenzy.  30 seconds later, the teams headed for overtime.

In the extra session Grotti took the first shot but it went wide, while Mike DiMarco's shot 30 seconds later for CUA was high.

As the clock continued to move towards the end of the first overtime session Grotti ended this one when he scored in the 99th minute and ended CUA's two-match winning streak.

CUA outshot Rutgers-Camden 16-11 and had five corner kicks to the Scarlet Raptors three.  Sean Libby got the start in goal for the Cardinals and stopped one shot, while VanLiew sent back eight shots on the other side.

CUA will be back in action on Saturday afternoon when the Cardinals play host to Moravian in the 2011 Landmark Conference opener.  Match time is slated for 1 p.m. from CUA Soccer Field.
