Season
9/20/2008
WASHINGTON- The Catholic University of America won their third
straight game this Saturday, as they went head-to-head with
non-conference opponent McDaniel College. Dominating from start to
finish, the Cardinals managed to wrack up 31 points while holding
the Green Terror to just seven.
CUA immediately seized control of both the offensive and
defensive sides of the field. Just seconds into the first quarter,
Greg Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./Malvern Prep) scored a
three-yard touchdown, and Brendan DeLuca (Gambrills, Md./St. Mary's
(Md.)) converted the field goal to put the Cards up 7-0. The next
scoring play would come from an incredible 76-yard pass from Keith
Ricca (Poolesville, Md./St. John's Prospect Hall) to Miles
Sabrick (Douglassville, Pa./Reading Central Catholic). DeLuca once
again added the field goal, and the quarter ended 14-0 in CUA's
favor.
It did not take long for the Cardinal offense to feed off its'
first quarter success. Only utilizing 39 seconds off the clock of
the second quarter, freshman Joseph Owens (Blackwood, N.J./Paul
VI) kicked the ball 37 yards to put the Cards ahead 17-0.
Catholic University's defense was able to hold McDaniel to just 66
yards passing to CUA's 193.
While the third quarter was relatively quiet, Catholic
University put an exclamation point on their already impressive
lead in the fourth. Brown found the endzone for the second time
that afternoon, bringing the Cardinal lead to 31-0. Although the
Green Terror found their way on to the scoreboard before the
final seconds ticked away, the damage had already been done: CUA
ran away with a 31-7 victory.
Leading the way for the Cardinal defense was Nick Olivero
(Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) with a total of 8.5 total tackles.
David Boone (Gainesville, Fla./Gainesville Santa Fe) also
chipped in 1.5 sacks for a total of 10 yards. Offensively, Ricca
threw for 321 yards, completing 21 out of 30 passes.
The Cardinals will hit the road next Saturday for their first
conference game against Randolph-Macon. Game time is scheduled for
1 p.m.
