Cardinals Take a Draw at St. Mary's
Teams battle for 13 innings before game is called
4/10/2008
ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - The Catholic University baseball team
(13-11-1) settled for a 3-3 with the St. Mary's Seahawks (14-17-1)
Thursday afternoon in Maryland. The squads took it to 13
innings but the umpires called the marathon game due to darkness
after almost four hours of play.
St. Mary's took an early lead in the bottom of the third on a
two-run single to right center field to make it 2-0. For the
next three innings both squads forced a quick three outs but CUA
was no closer to capturing the lead until the top of the
seventh. Mike Goodman (Brookville, Md./Sherwood) led off the
inning with a single and stolen base, Robbie O'Brien (Columbia,
Md./Long Reach) then walked to put two runners on. Joe Devine
(Medford Lakes, N.J./Shawnee) was the third batter and smacked a
triple to right field bringing in both runners. Matthew
Rosner (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) kept the rally alive
singling to left driving Devine across the plate to give CUA a 3-2
lead.
The Cardinals' advantage was short lived, however, as a sac fly
helped one Seahawk runner tie it up. After scores from both
squads it looked as each had the offense going, but that wasn't the
case as neither could find a way to get the winning run forcing
four extra innings. The closest call came in the bottom of
the 11th when St. Mary's had the bases loaded with just
one out. With things looking bad after a triple, an
intentional walk and a hit batter, pitcher Michael Bzozowski
(Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) regrouped and struck out the next two
batters to keep CUA alive. Unfortunately it didn't get the
win as the game was called for darkness tied at three.
St. Mary's out hit CUA 8-5 and each team committed one
error. Devine led the Cardinal batters with two RBI and a run
scored. The Cards used six different hurlers in the contest
with Drew Hoffmaster (Brookeville, Md./Sherwood) pitching six
innings with three strikeouts and Bzozowski adding four SO in his
two innings.
The Cardinals will host Scranton this weekend in a three-game
Landmark Conference series. Saturday's doubleheader begins at
noon.
