Class of 1999 (Inducted Oct. 22, 1999)
Charles Boettner '75 – Baseball
Boettner compiled a career 26-4 record at Catholic and set several records, including a 19-strikeout game against Trinity (Conn.) in 1974. At one stretch he had 129 strikeouts in 133 innings pitched. As a senior, he beat the Philadelphia Phillies' minor leaguers in an exhibition in Clearwater, Fla., compiled a 7-1 record with a 1.26 ERA, and five-hit Towson to lead Catholic to the Mason-Dixon Conference championship. As a junior, he was named a Metro Fall League All-Star, batting .322.
Boettner was a teammate of Hall of Famer Andy Kurkjian from elementary school through college, and from 1968 to 1975 it would have been difficult to see Boettner throw a pitch when Kurkjian was not behind the plate.
Michael Halpin '62 - Men's Cross Country, Men's Track & Field
Halpin was an integral part of the cross country and track teams in the late 1950s and early 1960s. In his sophomore year, he won five of his first six cross country meets. A gifted athlete, Mike once made up a 15-yard deficit in the final lap to win a race with a 4:33 mile.
Dr. Andrew Kurkjian '75 – Baseball
A four-year starter at catcher for the baseball team, Kurkjian led the team in home runs, doubles, and RBI over that span. A two-time Mason-Dixon Conference and Fall Metro League All-Star, he set school records in 1974 for home runs (8) and RBI (25) over a 20-game season. Kurkjian was ranked in the Top 10 in Division I for homers per at-bat. He also threw out 45% of attempted basestealers as a senior, including six in a 1-0, 10-inning win against Howard.
Kurkjian was a teammate of Hall of Famer Chuck Boettner from elementary school through college, and from 1968 to 1975 it would have been difficult to see Boettner throw a pitch when Kurkjian was not behind the plate.
Jane Martin '81 - Women's Basketball, Softball
Connolly transferred to Catholic in 1978 and had an immediate impact on the Cardinal basketball and softball teams. Her first season, she led the basketball team to a 16-8 mark and averaged 17 points per game, including a 26-point performance against Bowie State in the championship of the Catholic University Invitational. As a senior, she led all scorers with 18 points per game, and finished her career with a 17.3 point-per-game average, still second all-time. She still leads the program in assists per game, with 4.4.
Connolly pitched the varsity softball team's first game, beating the Naval Academy 5-2 on a one-hitter, posting eight strikeouts. She earned eight of the team's 11 wins the next season, batting .349.
William Uber '58 - Men's Basketball
A four-year starter at point guard, Uber helped the team go from three wins his freshman year to 13 his senior year and a seeded spot in the Mason-Dixon playoffs for the first time in a decade. Uber, a three-year captain, also led the team in assists his last three seasons.
