Class of 1997 (Inducted Oct. 25, 1996)

Robert Hickey '74 – Baseball
Hickey played baseball all four years at CUA and was captain his senior year. His freshman season he ranked eighth in the country in hitting at .423 and was named All-Mason-Dixon Conference. As a sophomore he was a member of the All-Washington, D.C. Metropolitan University Fall Team. His career batting average was .346.
In recognition of his four years of outstanding service to the University as a scholar, an athlete, and a gentleman, Hickey was awarded the 1974 Harris Cup trophy, the most coveted athletic award CUA offers its graduating seniors. He went on to be assistant baseball coach under Bob Talbot until 1977.
 

Ratchada Suber '81 – Volleyball
Suber played volleyball all four years at Catholic on a full athletic scholarship. She dominated on a team that won more games than any other in school history. During two of her years, 1978 and 1980, she led the team to the AIAW regional finals. (The AIAW was the national governing body for women's sports before the NCAA began sponsoring women's championships.)

As captain of the volleyball team during her senior year, the Cardinals compiled a 39-14 record. Suber's leadership on the court helped the team defeat national powerhouses such as Virginia, East Carolina, and Pittsburgh.

 
George Matthews '60 - Men's Cross Country, Men's Track & Field
Matthews a four-year member of the cross country and track team. He was the Mason-Dixon Conference champion in the 440 yard dash in 1957, 1958, and 1959. In 1959 he also won the 880 yard run and placed seventh in the overall Mason-Dixon Championship. In 1959, Matthews was awarded the Corbett Cup, which is given to the outstanding track athlete of the year. Matthews was killed in 1970 in Vietnam serving his third tour of duty as a naval officer.

 
William Wilson '69 - Men's Basketball
Wilson was a four-year member of the basketbal team. He earned many honors for his play at both the offensive and defensive end of the court. He was named to the Mason-Dixon Conference's All-Tournament and All-Conference teams for three years. He made the All-Region and All-Metropolitan College/University Team in 1969. In his senior year Wilson served as captain, was named MVP of the team, and once made the All-East Team of the Week. In recognition of his four years of outstanding service to the University as a scholar, an athlete, and a gentleman, Wilson was awarded the 1969 Harris Cup trophy, the most coveted athletic award CUA offers its graduating seniors. He finished his career with 1,234 points, including 30-point performances against Johns Hopkins and Holy Cross..

 
Tom Young - Men's Basketball Coach
Young coached basketball for nine years at Catholic from 1958-67, during which time his teams compiled an impressive record. He was the second-winningest coach in CUA history at the time of his retirement with 134 victories. In 1964, Young coached the Cardinals to their second NCAA Tournament appearance. He is most remembered for the team's upset victories over Georgetown on their home court and St. Joseph's University at the Palestra in Philadelphia. Young, who also coached at American, Rutgers, and Old Dominion, has 524 career wins.
