Arthur "Dutch" Bergman - Football Coach
Catholic University's football team was among the finest in the nation in the 1930s, and the man most responsible was Head Coach Arthur J. "Dutch" Bergman. He guided CUA to the most victories in its football history (59) and won the second Orange Bowl.
Before Bergman built the Flying Cardinals into a nationally prominent program, he helped Notre Dame become a national power as a player. He was a roommate of George Gipp and played under Coach Knute Rockne.

Alphonse Calabrese '40 - Football, Men's Basketball
Calabrese was the starting center and team captain of the 1940 Sun Bowl team. Among numerous highlights, recovered a fumble for a touchdown in a 27-14 win against the University of South Carolina in 1937. Calabrese was a four year member of the basketbal and football team.

Frederick Favo '55 - Men's Track & Field, Men's Cross Country, Wrestling
A diverse athlete for Catholic, Favo ran cross country for three years and wrestled and ran track for four. Outstanding in indoor and outdoor track, he was undefeated in dual meet competition in the 440 yard run from 1953-55. Favo was Mason-Dixon Conference indoor track champion in the 440 yard and a member of the mile relay champions (1954-55), sprint medley relay champion (1953-55), and indoor record holder in the 440 (1953-54).
In outdoor track, Favo's career highlight was the 1954 District of Columbia A.A.U. 440 championship during which, as a non-scholarship athlete, he defeated all scholarship runners from Georgetown and the University of Maryland. In addition, Favo was a member of the Mason-Dixon Conference's mile relay champions (1952-55), 220 yard champion (1953-55), 440 yard champion (1953-54) and a participant in the 1954 NCAA Track and Field Championships. As a wrestler, he was runner-up in the 1954 Mason-Dixon Conference Championships in and 137 lb. class, and in the 147 lb. class in 1955. He was awarded the Harris Cup in 1955. Favo was a four year member of the wrestling and track team. He also particapted in cross county his sophomore, junior and senior year.Â

Francis Fleming '35 - Football, Men's Basketball, Boxing
Red Fleming was a starting end on the football team for four years and named to the All-Washington Area All-Star team in 1933 and 1934. He was also undefeated light heavyweight boxing champion for four years and played baseball at Catholic. Fleming was selected to play in the first indoor football game at the Boston Garden on Dec. 11, 1935, playing for the Collegiate All Stars.
Fleming was signed by the National League's Boston Braves as a catcher in 1936 and was assigned to the Columbia, S.C., farm team. In the fall of 1936 and 1937 he was a starting end for the Boston Shamrocks in the American Professional Football League. Fleming was a four year member of the football team. He also particapted in basketball his sophomore and junior year, as well as boxing his junior and senior year.Â

John Kasunich '39 – Football
Kasunich was the captain of the 1938 football team and was on the 1936 Orange Bowl team. He was a four year member of the football team.
Rocco Pirro '40 - Men's Basketball, Football
Catholic's starting fullback on the 1940 Sun Bowl team, Rocco Pirro was a 12th round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers that year and went on to have a long career in professional football, finally retiring after playing for the 1949 Buffalo Bills. Pirro was a four year member of the football team and also participated in basketball.Â
