Cardinals Put on Scoring Showcase in Season Opener Against John Carroll


WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic men's soccer team hosted John Carroll for their first game of the Turk Emekli Classic. The Cardinals took down the Blue Streaks in a primetime meeting, 4-0.

The Cardinals managed to find their groove quickly after the initial kick-off on Carlini Field. They took possession and established their presence on the field, getting on the board within the first 15 minutes of game action.

The Cardinals were awarded a penalty kick after the Blue Streaks goalkeeper committed a foul in the 11th minute. Carson Shamoo stepped up to the line for the Cardinals and sent the ball to the bottom left, securing the first goal of the season. 

Shortly after, in the 21st minute, the Cardinals were granted a corner kick. After the initial attack was deflected by John Carroll, Catholic regrouped at the top of the box. Alessandro Marquez Zeleya popped the ball up in front of the goal, allowing teammate Seth Michalak to send one to the back of the net. Just 22 minutes into the game, Catholic had built itself a substantial lead. 

Freshman Kaleb Wilburn made his Cardinal debut in style, entering in the 41st minute of the half. Williams ran the ball up the field after Catholic secured the ball on a free kick. The freshman shook off his defender and added the third goal of the half to the Catholic scorecard with less than three minutes remaining. 

Halftime did not slow down the Cardinals, with Michael Brown adding the fourth goal of the night into the mix. In the third minute, Catholic brought the ball down into scoring territory. Brown took a shot off, but it was deflected off of the post and bounced right back to his feet. The senior shot the ball once again, this time earning the goal. 

Two freshmen made a big impact during their collegiate debut. Marquez Zeleya earned his way into the starting lineup and proved why with his assist and impressive gameplay. Wilburn's speed and ball handling skills were on display during his call from the bench, highlighted by his first Catholic goal. Mateo Muñoz also made his Cardinal debut, seeing 26 minutes of game action.

Senior captain Owen Allegro made his return as the starting goalkeeper for the Cardinals. The captain faced two shots, collecting a save on each, in his 72 minutes of action. Another senior goalkeeper made an appearance on the pitch tonight, earning 18 minutes of play. Trevor Grice faced four shots and earned four saves.

Captain Corey Magro held down the midfield with 75 minutes of gameplay, while teammate Graham Leary led the squad with 83 minutes in the backfield. 

Tonight's 4-0 win over the Blue Streaks marks the 29th regular season game without a loss, dating back to the Cardinals 2024 season. 

Earlier in the afternoon, Gettysburg and Mount Saint Mary battled on Carlini Field, where the Bullets defeated the Knights, 3-1. Up next, the Catholic will take on Mt. St. Mary in the Turk Emekli Classic finale at 3 p.m. on Sunday, September 5th.
