Men’s Tennis Shuts Out St. Mary’s Before Falling to Batten

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic men's tennis team hosted St. Mary's and Batten on Saturday. The Cardinals defeated the Seahawks, 7-0 before falling in a hard fought match to the Marlins, 4-1.

Match One: Catholic 7, St. Mary's 0

Catholic jumped out to an early advantage with a win on courts two and three. Jay Harper and Luke Hynes took the win on court two against Andrew Hand and Aidan Cron, 6-2. Drew Andrianopoulos and Charlie Robbins secured the doubles point on the third court, defeating Nathan Willoughby and Dylan Courtney 6-1.

Flynn Hollinger, Francis DeLucia and Jake Hershey quickly secured the match victory on courts one, two and three, respectively. Hollinger earned his 25th career win as he took down Jacob Nelson, 6-1, 6-2. DeLucia won in a similar fashion, defeating Aidan Cron in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. Hershey took down Alex Lyman 6-3, 6-3 on court three.

Andrianopolous, Harper, and Paulo Emanuelli also contributed to the shutout victory. Andrianopoulos faced off against Andrew Hand on court four, winning 6-2, 6-1. 

Match Two: Catholic 1, Batten 4

The Marlins jumped out to an early lead with two wins in doubles on courts one and two. Francis DeLucia and Luke Hynes took the win for Catholic on court three, 6-2.

In singles, Lorenzo Neri had a tough battle against Jed Platts on court one. Neri secured the win in set one, 6-1, but Platts kept close by, and won set two 7-5 to force a third set. The two duked it out in the third before Platts took the win 1-0, (10-6).

Ian Arenas also participated in a highly contested match against Batten's Ulrik Jasund. The two found themselves in a tiebreak in the first set that was won by Arenas, 7-6 (7-4). Arenas then swiftly took the victory in the second, 6-1.

Up next, the Cardinals will host Elizabethtown for their first Landmark Conference match of the season. The meeting is scheduled for Sunday, September 20 at 11 a.m.
