Diego Romo of the Catholic men's tennis team has been named Athlete of the Week, it was announced by the Landmark Conference today. This is Romo's fourth career honor, and his first this season.
The senior from Laredo, Texas received this recognition after going 2-0 in the Cardinals crucial conference win over Goucher on March 31st. The Cardinals defeated the Gophers in a close contest, 4-3.
In doubles, Romo partnered up with
James Earwood in the one spot where they battled against Goucher's Gabe Naftoly and Benedikt Rummel. It was a highly competitive match up, but Romo and Earwood took the win in a tiebreak, 7-6 (7-5), securing the doubles point for Catholic.
In singles, Romo took on Guilherme Moraes, fighting hard against him in the four spot. The first set reached a tiebreak, but Romo pulled out the win, 7-6 (7-2). In the second set, Moraes fell once more to Romo, 6-4, allowing Romo to secure the third point for the Cardinals.
Romo received this recognition for the first time in 2023, then twice more in his Spring 2025 campaign.
Up next, Catholic will travel to Salisbury on Friday, April 10 for a non-conference match. The meeting is set to begin at 12 p.m. at the SU Indoor and Outdoor Tennis Center.
