WASHINGTON, D.C. - For the 18th straight season, the Catholic women's lacrosse team is heading to the Landmark Conference Championship. After defeating the third-seeded Moravian in Wednesday night's Semifinal game, 13-9, Catholic will head to Scranton to face off against the top-seeded Royals for the conference title.
Six members of the Catholic squad scored during the game, beginning with
Lindsay Sawyer who put the Cardinals on the board just over a minute into the game.
Henley Bredemann followed, beginning her hunt for a hat trick.Â
Faith Mahoskey added one for the Greyhounds, but
Annie Galarza answered, capping the first quarter with her first goal of the game, to give Catholic a 3-1 lead.
The battle continued in quarter two, starting with a goal from Bailey Leatherman in favor of Moravian. Catholic added four-straight, starting with
Maddie McDevitt's first of the game.
Maggie Traynor and
Izzy Fiore each added a goal, and McDevitt closed the scoring run with her second of the game as Catholic went up five.Â
The Greyhounds put up two more goals to close out the second quarter, but the Cardinals maintained the lead, up 7-4 heading into halftime.
Both teams kept up the fight in the second half. Bredemann began the scoring in quarter three, netting her second goal of the game. Fiore and McDevitt followed, Fiore with her second, while McDevitt had her hat-trick goal with just 18 seconds remaining in the quarter. Kerry Seiler added two for the Greyhounds, but Catholic remained ahead, leading10-6 as they went into the final quarter.
Fiore book-ended the fourth quarter with her third and fourth goals. Between the two goals from the senior attacker, Moravian added three of their own as they attempted to mount a comeback, while Bredemann scored her third, assisted by Galarza. The Cardinals held onto the lead, defeating the Greyhounds, 13-9.
Fiore led Catholic's offense with four goals, recording her ninth multi-goal game of the season. The senior has now found the back of the net in five consecutive Landmark Conference Tournament games and ranks second on the squad with 35 goals this year.Â
Bredemann followed with a three-goal performance, marking her 10th game this season with three or more. The junior attacker has now scored in all but one contest this year and leads the team with 41 goals. McDevitt also had three goals in the game, securing her fourth hat trick of the season.Â
Defensively,
Clare Martin caused two turnovers, her second game this season with multiple caused turnovers.
Kelly Bunnick also logged a caused turnover while scooping up three gound balls.
On the draw,
Tori Wilsey controlled possession with seven of Catholic's 16 draw controls, marking her fourth game this season with five or more. Wilsey, who averages 3.06 draw controls per game, has now totaled 55 on the year.
In goal,
Olivia Koch earned the win, recording four saves in the game.
Catholic will travel to Scranton on Saturday, May 2 for its 18th consecutive conference championship appearance. The Cardinals will face the Royals in the title game for the 10th straight time, with the Landmark Conference crown on the line.
