Arcement's Career Day Helps Cardinals Secure Late Game Wins Over Mary Washington

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Catholic softball team hosted Mary Washington for a late season non-conference set. After two gritty battles with the Eagles, the Cardinals pulled away with two wins.

GAME ONE – Catholic 2, Mary Washington 1 (8 innings)

The first matchup of the day was a true rubber match between the two squads with Catholic's Aubrynn Arcement pitching the full seven and into extras.

The Cardinals threatened their first run in the bottom of the second. Arcement singled down the left field line to start the inning and then followed it up with a stolen base. The senior advanced to third on a single from Kerri Hatcliffe, but was ultimately left stranded.

Acrement once again got the offense going in the bottom of the fourth with a leadoff single through the left side. Katie McHugh ended up on first as a result of a fielder's choice that got Acrement out. Hayden Hudson got the momentum going once again with a single up the middle, placing McHugh on third. With Catholic 60 feet from scoring, Hatcliffe executed a sacrifice fly to center and put the Cardinals on the board first.

Mary Washington did not let Catholic hold their lead for long, scoring in the top of the fifth. The Eagles earned an early base runner from a hit by pitch and moved her over to third with a pair of sacrifice bunts. Sofia Ponce entered the game as a pinch hitter for the Eagles and she collected an RBI with a single up the middle.

After seven complete innings, both squads remained with one run apiece, sending the game into extras.

Mary Washington started the inning with an athlete on second. Arcement made easy work of the first two batters, collecting two swinging strikeouts. The final out of the eighth was a groundout to Katie Scolese at shortstop.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Cardinals put Sam Grillo on second with Emma Fleming leading off. Fleming laid down a sacrifice bunt to put Grillo on third with just one out. Olivia Stinchcomb stepped into the box, looking to end the game here. The senior fouled the first two pitches off, quickly moving to an 0-2 count. The senior did not waver, sending the third pitch of her at bat over the centerfielder, collecting an RBI double to walk it off.

Catholic defeated Mary Washington 2-1 after eight innings in the first game of the doubleheader.

GAME TWO – Catholic 4, Mary Washington 3

Sophia Colangelo earned the game two start in the circle for the Cardinals and proved why by collecting three strikeouts in the top of the first. In the bottom of the first, Fleming started the Cardinals off with a double to right center. Stinchcomb then followed up with a walk, putting two Cardinals on with just one out. Arcement put the ball into play, reaching on a fielder's choice when the Eagles made the decision to get Stinchcomb out at second. Fleming capitalized on a throwing error from the shortstop on the play to plate the first run for the Cardinals in game two.

Mary Washington evened the score in the top of the third. A double and single back-to-back put a baserunner on third. The Eagles sent their first run of the game home off of a sacrifice fly to left. The Cardinals quickly answered when Hayden Hudson sent her first collegiate homer sailing over the center field wall in the bottom of the third.

In the top of the fifth, the Eagles once again took the lead. Mary Washington's Emily Angel hit a two RBI home run to center field.

In the bottom of the seventh, Catholic was down by two. Fleming hit a single through the right side to give the Cardinals a base runner. Arcement followed up with a single with two outs, putting runners on first and second. Scolese hit a game tying RBI single out to left center, with Fleming going from second to home and Arcement moving over to third. With McHugh in the box, Arcement took advantage of a wild pitch to score the game winning run, giving the Cardinals a sweep on the day.
