Cardinal Offense Comes Alive in Midweek Sweep Over Washington College

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Catholic softball offense came alive in today's doubleheader sweep over Washington College (Md.). The Cardinals defeated the Shorewomen 10-2 and 7-1 in the midweek matchup.

GAME ONE - Catholic 10, Washington College 2 (5 innings)

Sophia Colangelo started in the circle for the Cardinals, collecting a strikeout on three straight pitches to start the game. After producing two more ground outs, the Catholic offense had the opportunity to score first.

Geneva Webber gave Catholic an early spark with a single up the middle. Katie Scolese followed suit with a single up the middle of her own, scoring Emma Fleming and Olivia Stinchcomb who found their way on base. Hayden Hudson grounded out to the second baseman, but it allowed Scolese and Katie McHugh to rack up two more runs. Grace Christie earned her first RBI of the season with a double to the wall.

After a complete inning, the Cardinals towered over the Shorewomen 5-1. Grace Allen of the Shorewomen collected a two run RBI single, giving Washington College its lone two runs of the game.

Olivia Stinchcomb started the second inning out hot with a double to left center. Katie McHugh kept the fire going with a triple down the right field line, scoring Stinchcomb. Scolese continued the extra base hit trend with an RBI double.

Catholic attempted to add more in the bottom of the third, loading the bases, but were unable to push any across. Both squads went scoreless in the fourth inning as well.

Heading into the bottom of the fifth, the Cardinals led 7-2. Hudson and Faxon both collected singles to start the inning. Gabrielle Nanni scored Hudson with a single down the left field line. Webber earned herself another hit on the day, advancing Nanni to second. With Fleming in the box, Nanni collected a stolen base and Webber advanced to second. With Catholic runners now on second and third, Fleming earned herself a walk after a wild pitch. Nanni once again made a good read on the ball and scored. Webber capitalized on a bad throw from the catcher and scored the tenth run for the Cardinals, giving them the win in five innings.

With the Cardinal win, Colangelo earned her fourth of the season in the circle.

GAME TWO - Catholic 7, Washington College 1

Alex Pley, after her shutout performance in Florida, earned the start in game two of the doubleheader. The Cardinal defense once again shut down the Shorewomen in the top of the first.
Stinchcomb tallied her fourth double of the season in the top of the first. McHugh followed it up with a towering home run out to left center to once again give Catholic the first inning lead over Washington College.

In the top of the fourth, Lilly Wenzel sent one over the left center fence, giving the Shorewomen their lone run of the game. In the bottom of the fourth, the Cardinals tacked on three more runs. Christie earned a two run RBI of her second double of the day, the first coming in the earlier matchup between the squads. After collecting a hit, Hudson scored off a single out to center from Nanni, giving Catholic the 5-1 lead.

Stinchcomb once again doubled to start the bottom of the fifth. McHugh followed it up with her eighth walk of the season. Faxon was able to push a run across for the Cardinals with an RBI single to left center.

In the top of the sixth, Morgan O'Sullivan took to the rubber in her second appearance for Catholic. The sophomore produced a pair of groundouts and a fly out to shut down the Shorewomen.

Webber singled to start the bottom of the sixth and then collected back to back stolen bases. With Webber in scoring position, she was able to capitalize on Fleming's groundout to the second baseman.
O'Sullivan and the Catholic defense held it down in the top of the seventh giving way to the 7-1 win and the sweep of Washington College.
