HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - The Catholic women's tennis team faced off against Carroll University in the second match of their spring break trip on Wednesday afternoon. The Cardinals fell to the Pioneers, 1-6, at Hilton Head HS Tennis Center.
Despite a hard fight in the three doubles spot from
Annie Nemoy and
Ava Kaloustian, who won their match 6-3, the Pioneers set the tone for the day by taking the doubles point.
In singles, Nemoy faced off against Natasa Pupovac in the one spot, falling in a close contest, 5-7 and 2-6.
Ella Knox and Kaloustian both reached third-set tiebreaks against their Pioneer opponents. Knox faced Katherine Trifilio and forced the tiebreaker after dropping the first set 4-6 and taking the second set 6-4. Knox fell in the tiebreak 10-6. Kaloustian took the first set against her opponent, Gracie Niebler, 7-5 before dropping the second set 3-6. The two battled hard in the third-set tiebreak, where Kaloustian ultimately fell 10-7.
Meaghan Laniewski swept her opponent, Mia Franke, in straight sets. Laniewski picked up the sole point for the Cardinals, defeating Franke 6-2, 6-2.
Up next, the Cardinals will continue their trip with a final match against Lake Forest. The meeting is set for 8:30 a.m. on Friday, March 13 at Chaplin Park Tennis Center.
