Catholic Comes Up Short In Loss Against Roanoke

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Catholic softball team was unable to get its offense going at the right time against the Roanoke Maroons and fell 6-2.

Morrigan Gardiner took to the mound to face the Maroon offense in the top of the first. Roanoke, coming off of a loss against Case Western in the morning, started out hot and scored two runs in the top of the first. Gardiner was able to collect two strikeouts and force a fly ball to Geneva Webber to get out of the inning.

Katie Scolese put the Cardinals on the board with a solo bomb in the bottom of the second, her first of the season.

Gardiner threw three innings of scoreless ball before Roanoke powered three runs on three hits in the top of the fifth. Alex Pley came into the circle in the top of the sixth for the Cardinals. Karin Kapur collected an RBI double to give the Maroons another run, leading 6 to 1.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Cardinals were able to manufacture a run. Kerri Hatcliffe made her way to first when the catcher made an error with a pop up just inside fair territory. Elise Faxon poked a single up the middle, moving Hatcliffe over to second. Olivia Brousseau and Lisa Payne entered the game as pinch runners for the pair. Scolese demonstrated some discipline to earn a walk. With the bases loaded, Katie McHugh fouled out, causing some chaos on the bases.  Brousseau scored with the catcher making the throw to second base to tag Payne out. The Cardinals now trailed 6-2.

The Cardinals were unable to create any momentum in the bottom of the seventh, falling 6-2 to the Maroons. With this loss, the Cardinals move to 4-4 on the season.

Emma Fleming earned her first hit of the season in today's game.

Katie Scolese went .500 on the day with a home run, the first of the season, and collected a walk as well.

Up next, the Cardinals will take on Gettysburg on Tuesday, March 3rd at 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. at Catholic Softball Field.
