Sobkowicz Sets Meet Record in 5000m to Help Cardinals Place Third at Landmark Championships

SELINSGROVE, Pa. - The Catholic women's track and field team searched for their first indoor title at the Landmark Conference Championships on Saturday. The women finished third overall with a total of 111 points. Scranton took the top spot with 181 points and Moravian tallied 142 in second.

Olivia Sobkowicz started off the meet for the Cardinals, taking first place in the 5000m, breaking the meet record with a time of 17:41.01. Laurel McMahon took fourth in the event, clocking a time of 18:15.93. Both McMahon and Sobkowicz participated in the 3000m later in the day, with McMahon recording a personal best time of 10:28.69 to secure a second-place finish, while Sobkowicz crossed the finish line just behind her in fourth with a time of 10:34.57. McMahon's time in the 3000m meter moves her up the program record books from fourth to third overall in the event.

Catholic captured first in the 4000m Distance Medley Relay, with a team of Mya Sampong, Riley Walsh, Kate Hannan, and Erin Roche crossing the finish line one second ahead of the Scranton crew, in 13:07.71. Sampong went on to record a top-five finish in the 800m with a time of 2:27.68.

Also in the 800m, Bridgid Cavanaugh earned a seventh place finish, picking up points for her team. The freshman ran a personal best 2:29.31. Alexa Grassi ran 2:32.99 and Hannan logged 2:40.34.

The Cardinals also took first prize in the 4x400 Relay with a time of 4:04.31. The group of Mia McConnell, Brigid Byrnes, Zoey Brown, and Alicia Vo earned 10 points for the team with their program fourth best time. 

The Cardinals also found success in the 4x200 Relay, with Erin Buckley, Felicity Giampietro, Ainsley Reisman, and Kortney Clipper finishing runner-up in 1:47.70. Clipper later took sixth in the 200m in 26.71. Also in the 200m, Lauryn Pearson logged a personal best 27.67. Giampietro raced 27.83 and Reisman earned 28.04. 

Cavanaugh placed fifth in the mile to earn four points for Catholic, with a time of 5:20.31. Roche recorded a time of 5:45.14 and Sara Roberts logged 5:58.79, a new personal best. 

Pearson picked up fifth with a new personal best in the 60m hurdles, finishing in 9.518. She remains as the fourth best performer in the record book with her updated best. Edith Tomasek placed sixth in the event with a personal best time of 9.519. She moves up the books from seventh to fifth overall. McConnell also made the 60m hurdles finals and placed eighth with a time of 9.81. 

In the preliminaries for the 60m hurdles, Rachel Sprauer earned a personal best 10.22 and Corina Colmenares Bittar raced a 10.82. 

Three Cardinals earned personal bests in the 60m preliminaries. Buckley qualified for the finals with a best time of 7.94. Clipper recorded 7.99 as her best time. Reisman competed a personal best time of 8.16. Buckley took sixth in the 60m finals, crossing the finish in 8.02. Buckley remains as the second best performer in program history with her updated best time. 

The Cardinals had a handful of athletes compete and earn points in the 400m. McConnell placed fourth and picked up five points with her time of 1:00.64. In seventh place with two points, and a season best, Brown logged 1:01.09. Vo picked up a point in eighth place with a personal best 1:01.30. Freshman Riley Walsh ran 1:02.78, a personal best. Rounding out the group was Sprauer (1:04.62) and Kiera Webster (1:05.51). 

Catholic also found success in the field events for the women. In the high jump, Tomasek placed third with a personal best height of 1.52m. She is now the sixth best performer in the Catholic books. Placing sixth with a jump of 1.47m was Pearson. Pauline Kennedy, freshman, earned her personal best with a jump of 1.37m. 

Chloe Dodd vaulted to a third place finish with a personal best height of 3.05m in the pole vault. 

Tomasek also led the way for the Cardinals in the triple jump. The junior logged a personal best distance of 10.65m and a fourth place finish. She moves up the record books one spot from fourth to third with her new best. Sophomore Kate Quashne logged a personal best 10.13m and moved up to fifth in program history.

Maggie McNulty placed eighth overall in the weight throw with a distance of 13.29m. Bethany Riddle threw a personal best 11.75m. 

In the shot put, Caroline Welsh threw 10.76m and McNulty recorded 9.73m. Kennedy reached 9.17m and Riddle threw 9.01m.

With her record-setting distance performance, Olivia Sobkowicz became the Landmark Indoor Track and Field women's Rookie of the Year. This is the second straight year that Catholic has swept both the women's and men's Rookie of the Year honors.

Up next, the Cardinals will travel to Winchester, Va. to participate in the South Region Final Qualifier hosted by Shenandoah. The meet is scheduled to take place on Friday, March 6th and Saturday, March 7th. Catholic will also plan to send some of its athletes to the Tufts National Qualifying Meet on Saturday, March 7th in Medford, Mass.
