Cardinals Continue Win Streak with Sweep of Hood

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Catholic softball team remains undefeated in its 2026 season with its convincing sweep over Hood.

GAME ONE – Catholic 10, Hood 0 (5 innings)

Aubrynn Acrement once again earned the game one start, forcing a ground ball and striking out two of the top of the Blazers' lineup to start the doubleheader. A double from Geneva Webber gave the Cardinals their first run of the day.

Catholic tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the second inning, with Katie McHugh and Kerri Hatcliffe making efficient moves on the base path.

The Cardinals' offense truly came alive in the bottom of the fourth inning. Gianna Samperi led off the inning with a single to right field to get the fire started. Acrement followed with a double. Sam Grillo earned two stolen bases to put herself in scoring position, which allowed her score by a ground ball by Olivia Stinchcomb. Katie Scolease and Hatcliffe hit back-to-back doubles to bring the Catholic lead to 9-0. Samperri once again came to the plate in the fourth inning and grounded out to third, but earned herself an RBI with Hatcliffe scoring the tenth run for the Cardinals.

Morrigan Gardiner came in to pitch in the top of the fifth for the Cardinals, looking to seal the 10-0 mercy. Gardiner collected three strikeouts, two swinging and one looking, to secure the first win of the day.

Elise Faxon went 2-for-2 at the plate and collected a stolen base. Four different Cardinals doubled in the 5-inning win: Geneva Webber, Katie Scolease, Kerri Hatcliffe, and Aubrynn Acrement.

GAME TWO – Catholic 8, Hood 0 (6 innings)

Morrigan Gardiner hopped back into the circle to start game two and picked up right where she left off with two strike outs and a line out.

Catholic added one run in the bottom of the first, thanks to Sam Grillo and Kerri Hatcliffe who created chaos on the base path. After earning a walk, Hatcliffe baited a throw to second base allowing Grillo to score from third.

In the second inning, Webber doubled to left center gap and earned two RBIs with Johanna Rostetler and Gabrielle Nanni scoring.

The Cardinals found their offensive stride once again in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring five runs. Leah Koegel led off the inning and logged a walk in her first at bat of the season. Webber once again earned herself a two run RBI hit when she singled through the left side. A double from Faxon gave the Cardinals two more runs, now sitting at seven runs with the winning run on third. Samperi sealed the deal with a sacrifice fly to right field that gave Hatcliffe plenty of time and space to score. With that, Catholic earned the 8-0 walk-off win in 6 innings.

Sophia Colangelo earned herself her second win of the season, once again going for five innings and chalking up eight strikeouts, one more than her previous outing.

Gabrielle Nanni went 3-for-3 in the second game, while also earning herself two runs. Geneva Webber led the team with four RBIs.

With today's win, the Cardinals move to 4-0 on the season.

Up next, the Cardinals will take on Case Western on Friday, February 27th. This will be their first game of the three day long Catholic Softball Tournament, hosting both Case Western and Roanoke. First pitch is slated for 11 a.m. on the Catholic Softball field.
