Cardinals Race Top DIII Boat at Head of the Ohio

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Catholic women's rowing team opened up its fall campaign at the Head of the Ohio Regatta. The race began upstream from downtown Pittsburgh at Washington's Landing and ended 3.2 miles downstream at Point State Park. 

The Cardinals sent four boats to Pittsburgh: V8+, V4+, 2V8+, and 2V4+.

In the V8+ boat, Sadie Mattaliano was the coxswain with Izzi Maxymuik in stroke and Charlotte Fritz in the bow. Other members of the boat were Sarah Williams (7), Malia Thole (6), Mary Bain (5), Bridget Robben (4), Madelyn Smith (3), and Adelaide Murrey (2). The varsity squad raced a time of 14:28.024, which placed them sixth out of 15 crews. Catholic was the top Division III boat in this race, following four squads from Duquesne and one from Mercyhurst. 

The 2V8+ also performed well in the Women's Collegiate/Open 8+. Maely Gomez was the coxswain with Clare Gallagher as her stroke and Victoria Recker in bow. Other members included: Ava Demeri (7), Bernadette Dineen (6), Madelyn Bronson (5), Valerie Villazon (4), Marelyn Diaz (3), and Samantha Flynn (2). This group raced a time of 15:52.852 to place 10th overall. Their boat was the third best DIII crew. 

Catholic also competed well in the Women's Collegiate/Open 4+. The Varsity boat consisted of Mattaliano as the coxswain, Gallagher in the stroke seat, April Penny as the 3, Demeri in 2, Bronson rounding out the group in bow. This team raced a time of 16:36.000.

The final squad of the day consisted of Gomez as the coxswain, Maxymuik in stroke, Williams (3), Thole (2), and Bain in bow. The Cardinals logged a time of 16:45.543 in the event. 

The team will be back on the water at the Occoquan Chase on Sunday, October 11th. The race will start at the Sandy Run Regional Run in Fairfax, Virginia.
