Catholic Celebrates Senior Day in Conference Home Opener Versus Moravian

WASHINGTON, D.C.  –  The Catholic men's soccer team celebrated its nine seniors on Saturday afternoon in its first home conference match of the season on Saturday afternoon against Moravian. Despite both teams creating dangerous attacking chances in the second half, neither the Cardinals or Greyhounds could find the back of the net and the contest concluded as a 0-0 draw.

Owen Allegro stepped up with a huge save in the opening 45 minutes as Colin Woehlcke received a pass with a clean look in the center of the 18. Allegro closed the gap on him and was able to make an impressive kick save to turn away the first dangerous chance of the game.

For the half, the Cardinals outshot the Greyhounds 8-2 as Graham Leary and Kaleb Wilburn each put shots on target that were saved. Moravian's lone other shot in the half came in the 43rd minute and missed the target high to send the game into the halftime break all square at zero.

The match took a huge swing in the 57th minute when Catholic received a red card, forcing it to play with 10 men for a majority of the second half. Immediately following the red card, the Greyhounds created a chance to take the lead but Allegro came up with yet another big save to keep the game knotted up.

Despite being down a man, the Cardinals did create some opportunities down the stretch with Christian Backich, Jack Cappuccio and Carson Shamoo all getting shots off over the final 20 minutes. Andrew Petruzzelli had an opportunity to give the Greyhounds a lead in the last five minutes but his shot went ringing off the crossbar to allow the Cardinals to come away with a 0-0 draw to move to 7-0-3 on the season and 1-0-1 in conference play.

Allegro finished the contest with three saves, his second game this season with three or more saves, bringing his season total to 15. He along with Ellington Andrews, Corey Magro and Charlie Paparella all played the full 90 minutes in the draw.

Catholic returns to the field on Wednesday, October 7 for another Landmark home match against Goucher at Carlini Field. Kickoff is set for 7 pm.
