UPPERCO, Md. – The Catholic men's golf team continued its fall slate on Thursday morning at the Piney Branch Golf Club for the Stevenson Fall Invitational. In a field of 14 teams, The Cardinals finished the day with a score of 599, as all players finished 36 holes, to finish in second at +31, 10 strokes behind the winners. The 599 is the eighth-best two team score in program history.
The Cardinals had two players finish in the top 10 of the field, led by Joe Earley who came away as the individual winner of the tournament shooting a 72 (+1) and a season low 71 (E) over his two rounds on the course. During the first round, Earley converted four birdie opportunities, including three on the front nine and also added nine pars. He added four more birdies, this time three on the back nine, in his second round to help him come out on top of the 77 player field.
The other Catholic player to finish in the top 10 was Julio Rodas-Rhim as he placed in a tie for sixth on the leader board. In his first round, Rodas-Rhim impressed as he notched pars on eight of the nine holes and kept the momentum going on the back nine with birdies on holes 10, 11 and 18 with four more pars to have a 73 after 18. He added just one more stroke during the second round as he parred every hole except four and once again picked up a birdie on par four at hole 18.
Matthew Begg finished 21st in the standings after shooting an 83 in his first round where he had eight pars and a birdie. Begg improved his second by 12 strokes in the second round as he collected four birdies on the back nine to go along with 10 pars, seven of which came on the front nine, to finish his second round with a 71. Timothy Cleary finished in the top 30 as well after shooting a 77 on the first 18 holes where he had two birdies on three and six and finished the round with five straight pars. He followed with an 80 in the second round where he had multiple streaks of three pars in a row.
Connor Desjardins was the last Cardinal to compete and he shot an 81 and 83 over his two rounds. He also picked up two birdies throughout the day. Harry Traynor and Matthew Dietl competed independently as Traynor finished in 13th in the field and had the lowest round of any player in the field with a 70 in his second round. He collected three birdies and 13 pars over the round. Dietl shot an 81 and 83 in his two rounds.
Catholic is back in action on Wednesday, October 7 for the Battle of the Beltway II at Oakmont Green.
