CARLISLE, Pa. — The Catholic men's golf team completed its first match of the season on Sunday and Monday at the Dickinson Fall Invitational. The Cardinals played steady throughout the two days, shooting a 294 and 295 on the respective days, which was the lowest two round score in program history, to finish in 6th place out of 21 teams in the opening match of the season.
Joe Earley put together the best first round for the Cardinals on Sunday as he shot a 71(-1) to have himself in eighth place in the field. He shot a 35 on the front nine, going through the first seven holes with five pars and two birdies. He followed up with a 36 on the back nine and racked up seven pars and a birdie to sit in the top 10 after day one. He followed up with an even better day two, tying the 10th best round in program history by shooting a 69 to finish the tournament at -4. His -4 was good enough for a fifth place finish in the field. He knocked in six more birdies in the round and birdied four of his last six holes to finish the back nine with a 33.
A pair of juniors finished tied in 32nd for Catholic as
Matthew Dietl and
Connor Desjardins each shot a 74 (+2) during the first day and matched the same scores on the front and back nine as well. Dietl birdied each of the last three holes to close out his round with three birdies and 11 pars. Desjardins poured in three birdies and 11 pars as well.
Dietl followed up with an even better second day as he shot his career best round with a 71 (-1), three strokes better than his previous best. He finished with seven pars, a birdie and the first eagle of the season on the back nine to complete his career lowest round score. He moved up 21 spots to be in 11th to end the tournament.
Matthew Begg finished just one stroke behind his teammates with a 75 (+3) after getting off to a strong start with birdies on three of his first five holes. Begg finished his first round by going on a five hole stretch of three birdies and two pars for a solid finish in his collegiate debut.
On the Cardinals 'B' team,
Timothy Doheny put together the best round of his career, beating his previous low round by a stroke with a 72 (E) to sit in 15th. He racked up six pars and two birdies on the front nine and added two more birdies to his total on the back nine. Doheny shot two under on the front nine on day one. Doheny was sharp on day two as well, shooting a 74 (+2) to finish in 14th place in the field. He tallied three more birdies and 11 pars in his second round.
Jeremiah Brown also competed on the 'B' team and finished the round at 74 (+2), shooting a 37 on both nines on the course. He finished with four birdies on the afternoon while adding nine pars as well on day one.
The Cardinals next match is Thursday, September 18 at the Susquehanna Fall Invitational that will take place at the Susquehanna Valley County Club.
