HAGERSTOWN, Md. — The Catholic women's golf team hosted the Cardinal Fall Classic over the weekend and came away with a second place finish in the 9 team field. The Cardinals shot a 626 as a team over the two-day event to finish only behind Marymount (Va.). The 626 two-day score was the second-best two day score in program history, six strokes shy of the program record.
Lauren Wright had the highest finish for the Cardinals, coming in fifth place. She used a career-low second round with a 74 (+2) to help her secure a top five spot in the field. Wright started her second round on Sunday with a birdie followed by seven consecutive pars on the front nine. She added seven more pars to her total on the back nine to finish the round at 74 after shooting a 77 in the first round.
Brooke Smith came in a spot behind Wright, finishing in a tie for sixth place. She shot a 79 in the first round and a 76 in the second round to finish at +11 for the weekend. Smith started the second round off with two birdies and six pars on the first eight holes and added four more pars and a birdie on the back nine to help take three strokes off her previous round.
Mary McGuire and
Gabi Courtney also came away with top 10 finishes, placing in eighth and a tie for ninth respectively. McGuire shot a 78 in the second round, which was a career-low round for the junior. She poured in nine pars and two birdies in the round. Courtney shot an 81 in both rounds and ended her second round with six consecutive pars to secure a top 10 spot in the field.
Harper Capilli led the Catholic 'B' team and finished in the top 20, coming in 16th. She matched her career low round in the first round with a 79 and picked up eight pars and one birdie in her second round on Sunday.
The Cardinals are competing at the Stevenson Invitational on Monday, September 29 at Piney Branch Golf Course.
