WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Catholic women's tennis team looked to pick up its first two wins of the fall season at home on Saturday afternoon against York (Pa.) and St. Mary's (Md.). The Cardinals successfully collected a pair of wins by scores of 6-1 and 5-2.
MATCH ONE- Catholic 6, York 1
The Cardinals were able to take the doubles point by sweeping the three matches. The number three pairing,
Alyson Morris and
Ella Knox, closed out their doubles match first by taking the set six games to two.
Ava Niggemeier and
Mairead O'Hara played in the number two doubles slot and locked up the doubles point by winning their set 6-3.
Shloka Tambat and
Annie Nemoy finished off the sweep with a 6-4 set win.
After losing the first point in singles, the Cardinals quickly bounced back as Nemoy pulled off a win in the number one spot in two sets by scores of 6-4 and 6-3. O'Hara won her matchup in the number three spot in two sets, winning in extra games in the second set, 7-5.Â
Meaghan Laniewski secured a match win for Catholic in the number four singles spot in convincing fashion by set scores of 6-3 and 6-1.
Ava Kaloustian and
Samantha D'Addezio also picked up wins in the fifth and sixth spots to close out a 6-1 win for the Cardinals.
MATCH TWO- Catholic 5, St. Mary's 2
The Cardinals once again started off on the right foot by gaining the doubles point with three wins. The pairing of Tambat and Nemoy secured their second victory of the day in the number one doubles spot by winning six games to one. D'Addezio played with Kaloustian and the two both got their first doubles win of the season by a score of 6-3. The team in the number three spot, Laniewski and
Marcela Pena, finished off the sweep for Catholic also by a score of 6-3. It was Peña's first career doubles win.Â
Laniewski picked up her second singles win of the day in the number three spot in back-to-back sets by scores of 6-0 and 6-1. After falling in the number one spot, the Cardinals took a 3-1 lead in the match when O'Mara won in straight sets by scores of 6-2 and 6-3.
The win was secured by Niggemeier in the number four spot as she took care of things in two sets, 6-0 and 6-2, to give Catholic the match at 4-1.Â
Ryan Adesso captured her first collegiate singles win in the number six slot in two sets, winning 6-1 and 6-4.
Catholic's next match will be on the road at Lebanon Valley on Saturday, September 20.
