Stypul Takes Gold, Catholic in Fourth After Day One

SELINSGROVE, Pa. - The Landmark Conference Championships kicked off for the Catholic men's track and field team with the Cardinals sitting in fourth place after six scored events. 

Joe Wolfe got the Cardinals on the board in the standings in the 10,000m by coming in fifth place to earn the team four points. He ran a season-best time in the event, clocking in at 33:05.22 to finish in the top five in the field of 24.

Catholic picked up 15 more points in the pole vault, headlined by Gabe Stypul who took home the individual championship in the pole vault for the first time in his career. Stypul earned Catholic 10 points by taking first place in the event with a season-best mark of 4.25m. He joined Christian Di Nicolantonio as the only other Catholic athlete to win the pole vault at the Landmark Conference Championships and moves into fifth on Catholic's all-time list. Charles Connolly added five more points to the Cardinals total by coming in fourth place with a PR-tying jump of 3.85m. 

Conor Gross picked up three more points for Catholic in the 1500m by coming in sixth place out of 24 runners. Gross finished up with a time of 4:00.25 to lead the Cardinals who participated in the event.

Three more points were added to the team total by Adrian Villatoro who finished in sixth place in the long jump with a PR jump of 6.57m. The jump was the seventh-best performance in program history to bring Catholic's point total to 25.

Aidan Lang added two points in the hammer throw with a season-best toss of 40.27 meters. Bobby Santangelo placed ninth, just missing a point, but picking up a career-best mark of 39.64 meters to move into fourth on Catholic's all-time list. 

Catholic had three runners qualify for tomorrow's final in the 100m, Jevontae Fearwell, James Galang and Sam Compton. Farewell finished second in the race with a time of 10.68, just .02 second behind Brandon Zimmerman of Susquehanna. Galang came in fourth place in the race with a time of 10.95 and Sam Compton finished behind him, running a PR time of 10.96 to also qualify for the finals. The finals will take place tomorrow at 1:50 pm.

Fearwell also put himself into the finals in the 200m by coming in third place in the prelims. Fearwell qualified with a time of 21.61 to advance to the finals, just .01 seconds slower than the runner in front of him and .07 seconds slower than Susquehanna's Elliott Davis. The finals will take place tomorrow at 3:20 pm.
