Cardinals Fall Short in Game Two of Landmark Championship Series

BETHLEHEM, Pa.  — The Catholic softball team looked to force and winner take all game three against Moravian on Sunday afternoon after dropping the first game of the championship. Despite falling behind 2-0, the Greyhounds rallied for five runs in the top of the sixth and held on for the final two innings to capture their 12th Landmark Conference Championship 5-2 over the Cardinals.

Aubrynn Arcement was strong in her first five innings in the circle for the Cardinals, shutting Moravian out while only allowing four hits to send the game into the bottom of the fifth tied up at zero. In the top of the third Katie Scolese threw a runner out at the plate on a two-out single up the middle to help keep the game scoreless.

Olivia Stinchcomb ripped a one-out single down the right field line and Elise Faxon followed up with a walk in the bottom of the fifth to put two runners on for Catholic. With two outs in the inning, Kerri Hatcliffe placed an RBI single into right field to bring in Stinchcomb for the first run of the game. Toni Ruley also picked up an RBI single to bring Faxon to the plate to double the Cardinals lead to 2-0.

Three errors in the top of the sixth helped the Greyhounds bring in five runs to score to take their first lead of the game. Ajala Elmore recorded the big hit in the inning, a three-RBI single into center field as Moravian totaled four hits in the inning to help them grab the advantage.

Sarah Destefano kept the Cardinals off the board over the final two innings to record her 20th win of the season and earn the Greyhounds the auto-bid into the NCAA tournament with a 5-2 win, taking both games in the championship series. Catholic ends the season with a 31-12 record, the most wins in a single season in program history.
