Cardinals Drop Well-Pitched Contest to Elizabethtown

TYSONS, Va.  —  The Catholic baseball team finished up the regular season series with Elizabethtown in a stand alone game on Tuesday afternoon. In a well pitched contest, the Blue Jays came up with some timely hits in the middle innings and kept the Cardinals lineup off-balance throughout the game to complete a 4-1 win.

After Sam Fairhurst no-hit the Blue Jays during the first four innings, they strung together four hits in the top of the fifth to bring home the first two runs of the game. David Woolley and Mason Woolwine came up with back-to-back RBI singles with two outs in the inning to make it a 2-0 lead. Fairhurst struck out the last batter of the inning to limit the damage and escape the jam.

Nick Fiorini extended the lead the next inning with a sacrifice fly into center field to push it to a 3-0 game. Fairhurst once again punched out the last batter of the inning to keep the deficit at three.

Dante Pozzi and Mitchel Johnson each reached base in the bottom of the sixth to put two runners on with two outs. Elizabethtown threw the ball away on a pick off attempt that rolled into right field that allowed Johnson to score all the way from second base to bring in the Cardinals first run of the game.

After the Blue Jays tacked on an insurance run in the top of the ninth, Catholic brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth after Sammy Burman and Matthew Fisher each singled to start the inning off. Paul Kvech came in out of the pen for Elizabethtown and shut the door, retiring all three batters he faced in a row to close out a 4-1 win for the Blue Jays. The Cardinals dropped to 15-14 on the season and 7-8 in conference play.

The Cardinals are back in action tomorrow, April 16 for a matchup against sixth-ranked Salisbury in Hanover, Md.. First pitch is slated for 4 pm at Joe Cannon Stadium.
