Bosak Dazzles in Split Against Coast Guard

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Catholic baseball team squared off with Coast Guard on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader trying to push above .500 in the early season. Cody Bosak shined in game two as the Cardinals shutout the Bears in a 5-0 win in a split on the day to set up a rubber match in tomorrow's matchup.

GAME ONE

Score: Coast Guard 7, Catholic 2
Records: Coast Guard (3-0), Catholic (3-4)
Pitching Decision: W: Vito Giordano (2-0), L: Roman Tozzi (1-2), S: John DiMarsico (1)
The Short Story: The long ball in the early innings helped the Bears take an early lead over the Cardinals and a strong pitching performance from Giordano and DiMarsico kept the Catholic offense off balance and led to a five run victory for Coast Guard.
  • After a scoreless first inning, Coast Guard got the scoring started with a lead off homer to right center field off the bat of Rick Barkley to take an early lead that would hold throughout the remainder of the game. It was the second round tripper for Barkley on the season. The long ball helped the Bears tack on a couple of more runs after a lead-off single from Wyatt Duthu. This time Carson Cho left the building with one of his four hits of the game to extend the lead to 3-0.
  • Matthew Fisher led off the bottom of the inning with a double into the gap of left center field with Steve Thomas picking him up with a base hit to center field to bring him home and put the Cardinals on the board.
  • After The first two runners made their way on base for the Bears in the top of the fourth, Luke Pericifield brought in two more runs for Coast Guard with a two RBI knock into the outfield to make it a 5-1 ballgame.
  • Two more insurance runs were brought in for Coast Guard in the top of the ninth after they strung together three straight two out hits to build up the lead to six. Parker Madden had the big hit, a double into right center to plate two on his first hit of the game.
  • Thomas and Fisher came through again in the bottom of the ninth to get the Cardinals their second run. This time, Thomas doubled to trade places with Fisher who doubled earlier in the inning but that's where the scoring ended and Catholic dropped the first game, 7-2.

GAME TWO
Score: Catholic- 5, Coast Guard- 0
Records: Catholic (4-4), Coast Guard (3-1)
Pitching Decision: W: Cody Bosak (1-0), L: Raymond Priddy (0-1)
The Short Story: A masterful pitching performance combined with early offensive production led the Cardinals to a 5-0 win to earn a split with Coast Guard on the day.
  • The Cardinals struck early in game two after Thomas started things off with a single into center field followed by an error to advance him over to third base. Sammy Burman brought him in with an RBI groundout to plate Thomas and give Catholic the lead.
  • The game was broken open by Catholic in the bottom of the third inning with four runs to take a 5-0 lead. Thomas got on base once again to set the table for Zach Burton who proceeded to launch a two run homer for his first of the season. Logan Eilbacher cashed in with the bases loaded with a poke to left field to plate Burman and Mitchel Johnson and give the Cardinals all the runs they would need for a win.
  • Between Bosak and Jake Kenney the Cardinals pitching locked down the Bears lineup and held them to just three hits and completed the first shutout for the team this year to complete the fourth victory of the season for the team.
